Fennec foxes eat rodents, insects, birds, rabbits, and eggs, but this one doesnt. For years, vegan blogger Sonia Sae has been raising her pet fox Jumanji on a vegan diet, and it has developed all sorts of health problems. Recently, however, a few people worked hard to spread the word about this behavior they call abusive, and the internet is infuriated.
According to experts, a fennecs diet in the wild is comprised of about 90% animals and insects while the remaining 10% consists of various plants they dig up. Naturally, they need a lot of protein when living in captivity as well. Forcing her omnivore Jumanji on a vegan menu only, Sae has probably messed up its entire nutrition. For example, fennecs really need calcium and taurine. The latter is an organic compound thats widely distributed in animal tissues. Without it, these big-eared creatures will probably develop reproductive and heart problems. And this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Sae has already admitted that Jumanji is half blind, suffers from spontaneous convulsions and a severe skin condition. However, she refuses the idea that its diet is a cause of these problems. They use the word abuse to describe the act of feeding [it] food that no animal had to die for. Despite the obvious oxymoron, any other non-vegan alternative DOES involve abuse by default, she said in a Facebook post.
People have already contacted local animal rights authorities and are waiting for their response.

(4,407 posts)I don't believe in keeping wild animals of ANY type as pets. In most cases it is just cruel. What is wrong with having a dog or a cat?

(16,423 posts)The human is an omnivore and if you eat whatever your human instincts tell you, then you are healthy.
However, Vegans cannot eat whatever they want. Vegans need a diet balanced between specific vegetables and fruits in order to get all the vitamins and minerals they need stay healthy.
That's why many Vegans have a B12-deficiency: Plants (with the exception of the japanese red seaweed) do not contain enough B12 for a human diet.
And that's why many Vegans have a mineral deficiency: To get your minerals as a Vegan, it is absolutely mandatory to eat a lot of green leafy vegetables. And some people are too lazy for a healthy vegan diet and take nutritional supplement pills instead.
My point is: Unless done properly, you are constantly risking nutritional deficiencies with a vegan diet.

I don't think that you really mean that. Or apparently our "human instincts" are mistaken. The standard American diet has led to an epidemic of obesity.

According to the American Diabetes Association,
"In 2015, 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes"
But what you say is true: Vegans need to supplement with B12. And to eat a variety plant-based foods.

E V E R
Force ANY animal to eat MY diet.
I have two cats. CATS. ARE MEAT-EATERS. They are CARNIVORES.
I feed them CAT FOOD - MEAT. And not the cheap stuff either.
That DINGBAT is abusing her "pet" and it should be taken from her and put in a sanctuary or rehabilitation center where it will get proper care and especially a proper DIET for such an animal.
As for vegans eating what "human instincts" tell them..I know of no "human instinct" that programs us that we "need" meat. And MILLIONS of vegans are perfectly healthy thankyouverymuch WITHOUT any animal products.
But humans can make that decision for themselves. CAPTIVE ANIMALS CAN'T. And it's up to their caretakers to feed them a proper diet. And this woman IS abusing this poor animal.

(25,586 posts)of a vegan diet for me. No deficiencies, strong bones, my b12 is fine, etc. I use a multivitamin but thats probably a good practice for anyone, vegan or otherwise. I have a physically-demanding job and I regularly outwork people far younger than me.

(4,516 posts)is the only position.
Our diets have as much meat as it does because it is readily available.
If we all had to hunt for meat our diets would be more toward vegetarianism.
We eat so much meat that we have much organ disfunction.

(16,423 posts)If a mixed diet would make us sick, we would on average be weaker than a person on a vegan diet and that would show up over the hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution.
Example:
Lactose-tolerance in human adults is a mutation that should not exist. Yet the ability to consume milk-products as an adult has proven to be so valuable for survival that this mutation became the new normal.
(There is a theory that the second immigration-wave to Europe in the Stone-Age was able to defeat the natives because they could use milk-products to supplement their diet, while the Stone-age people from the first immigration-wave could not.)
Same goes for eating meat. We have evolved towards a species that eats a mixed diet, as opposed to a vegan diet. Accordingly, a mixed diet must be better than a vegan diet.

(23,590 posts)pretty much ALL vegans don't behave like this. Pretty much all meat eaters don't torture their pets and kill their children.
The news finds an outlier and we vegans as a group are attacked.
People on this thread are assuming all of us act this way and it is personally infuriating to me.

(32,739 posts)had lots of foxes. They do not make good pets. No matter how tame they nip and have needle sharp teeth. They also mark things like food, toys etc. they mark stuff by peeing on them and their pee is very stinky.
Dont say you werent warned. P

(25,925 posts)on a vegan diet is appalling. Periodically vegan/vegetarians will do the same thing with cats, with similar disastrous consequences. If you insist your animals also follow your vegan diet, make sure you have one for which that is their natural diet.
