Art Bell, a self-proclaimed expert on the paranormal who hosted a popular syndicated radio show for decades, has died at the age of 72 -- on Friday the 13th, appropriately enough.
Bell died in his home in Pahrump, Nevada, according to the Nye County sheriff's office.
Community Announcement -- Long time resident, and radio show host, Art Bell died today at 72 years old in his home in Pahrump Nevada. https://t.co/eNOYD97i4b
-- Nye County Sheriff (@NyeSheriff) April 14, 2018
He started out as a disc jockey but drifted into political talk radio in the 1970s and saw a ratings boost when he veered into the realm of conspiracy theories and the paranormal. He espoused his belief in alien abductions, ghosts, crop circles report -- and even that the Hale-Bopp comet that neared the Earth in 1986 was being followed by a UFO.
Soon, his late-night show "Coast to Coast" gained national syndication and allowed him to broadcast from his own Pahrump-based radio station, KNYE 95.1 FM. At the height of his fame, as many as 500 stations carried his show in the U.S. and Canada.
Bell also made cameo appearances (typically as himself) in movies like 2007's "I Know Who Killed Me" and TV shows like "Dark Skies."
In a 1999 interview with Larry King on CNN, Bell displayed the even-keeled tone and that made his out-there theorizing seem so reasonable and inviting.
"People are always demanding proof," he told King at one point. "These are things that are not easily proved."

While I didn't espouse to Mr Bell's alien abduction belief's, I always found his shows, back in the 90's, entertaining and interesting. Many a night I would go to sleep listening to his soothing voice on the radio. RIP Art.

(2,050 posts)He had a better way to espouse his beliefs than the whack jobs on ancient aliens.
According to those nuts aliens were everywhere doing everything right up to the Industrial Age.
And "POOF" they were gone, conveniently disappearing right before we had the technology to help prove they existed.
At least Art was fun to listen to.
And at least twice as intelligent.

Old Art did fit right in.

Bell generally chose not to discuss his political views on Coast to Coast AM, though occasionally he brought them up. He expressed support for the right to bear arms and same-sex marriage.[citation needed] He also used to be, in his own words, a "staunch" supporter of the death penalty, though he changed his mind at least to some extent due to innocent people being sentenced to death.[citation needed]
Bell at times seemed to support many different 9/11 conspiracy theories, such as the one that claims the World Trade Center was brought down by explosives planted in it in advance. However, shortly after the September 11 attacks, Bell uploaded an image stating "God Bless George W. Bush and the U.S.A." .[15]
Bell was a member of the U.S. Libertarian Party.[citation needed] Originally, Coast to Coast AM was a conservative political talk show, but in later years Bell expressed both conservative and liberal views on the air. On air, Bell showed support for immigration reform and decriminalizing marijuana. At other times he expressed dismay at the presence of millions of illegal aliens in the US. He, at times, criticized man's role in degrading the natural environment, while, at other times, he expressed doubt about the "scientific" basis behind human caused global warming. In fact, hundreds of times he agreed with guests or callers who claimed global cooling was occurring or was about to occur. Bell also stated that he opposes abortion. At the outset of the Iraq War in 2003 he stated he did not think that a war against Iraq was worth the life of "one American service man or woman." Bell supported a free market economy.[citation needed]
Bell supported Barack Obama for President of the United States in the 2008[16] election.[17]

(7,976 posts)Makes my head spin. When I worked 2nd shift I would tune into WLW (700 "The Big One" I think it was and Art Bell wasn't the only "character" on during the night. The inmates had taken over the asylum, especially if a devil Dem was residing in the WH. The evil power of Clinton and Obama was something to behold!

(27,910 posts)I loved listening to Coast to Coast AM,, and did so every night, including weekends, when it was either a guest host or a re-run.
He was the founder and original owner of Pahrump-based radio station KNYE - FM
Coast to Coast AM began in 1988 and he ran the show from his Pahrump, Nevada home.
Bell retired and returned to Coast to Coast several times.
His first retirement was announced on October 13, 1998, but he returned on October 28, 1998.
His second retirement occurred on April 26, 2000, but he returned to Coast to Coast AM in February 2001.
On October 23, 2002, he again announced his retirement, and was replaced by George Noory as weekday host on January 1, 2003.
Bell returned as weekend host in September 2003.
In June 2005, he scaled this schedule back.
On July, 2007, he again announced his retirement, but said that he intended to occasionally substitute for other hosts and host "special Shows.
On December 11, 2015, Bell announced his final retirement on Facebook
A self-describer Libertarian, he did lean conservative, and did interview many right-wing-nut cases such as:
- Matt Drudge
- Alex Jones
- Michael Medved
- Steven Quayle
But, over the years, Art Bell also interviewed many other celebrities who were not in any way involved in the "paranormal" or right-wing conspiracies, such as:
- Willie Nelson
- Crystal Gayle
- Merle Haggard
- Eric Burdon
- Gordon Lightfoot
- George Carlin
- Robert Monroe
- X-Files writer/creator Chris Carter
- Leonard Nimoy
- Dan Aykroid
- Jane Seymour
- Robert Stack
- Human rights lawyer John Loftus
- Legendary disc jockey Casey Kasem
- and many other famous people as well
Physicist Michio Kaku was a frequent guest
Also appearing frequently on Coast to Coast AM' was the investigative journalist and Emmy Award winning documentary filmmaker, Linda Moulton Howe, who reported on UFOs, crop circles, cattle mutilations, and other phenomena.[Her website is 'Earthfiles.com']
I'm truly saddened to hear of Art Bell's death.
Apparently, the cause of death won't be known until an autopsy is done
Interesting that the show's website makes no mention of Art Bell's death, at least on the front page.
It's a great website, with a guest list of over a thousand names

(27,910 posts)Linda Moulton Howe often reported on crop circles in England.
Sometimes there were hundreds of crop circles reported within a few days time in certain parts of rural England.
The hoaxers, Doug Bower & Dave Chorley, couldn't possibly have made all those crop circles in such a short time.
Also, some of the crop circles were huge...and contained crop circles within other crop circles, and exhibited extremely complex mathematical patterns.
Surely, "Doug and Dave" couldn't be responsible for ALL such British crop circles.
Linda reported findings by biophysicist William C. Levengood about extreme differences on a molecular level between crops from inside crop circles compared to crops outside the crop circle.
Surely, "Doug & Dave" weren't responsible for changing the molecular structure of the actual crops and seeds themselves.
Linda never said that "All crop circles are real"..and I'm sure that "Doug & Dave" did make many, many crop circles by just using tools to "flatten" fields of wheat, corn, barley etc
But Dr. Levengood and other scientists such as biophysicist Eltjo Haselhoff have done extensive studies of the actual crops & seeds from crop circles that show differences on a molecular level, and merely attributing all crop circles to hoaxers like Doug & Dave is just B.S.
