The latest installment of the Star Wars saga, The Last Jedi officially gets an A CinemaScore. There was a lot of hype leading to the release of the Rian Johnson written/directed film, and not just because it is a Star Wars movie. Talks about how unexpected it is resolved some fans main gripe on JJ Abrams Star Wars: The Force Awakens seeming like a rehash of A New Hope. Also boosting peoples anticipation is the news that Lucasfilm has just given Johnson the reigns to develop a brand new trilogy, albeit separate from the main saga, indicating the companys confidence on the filmmaker.
A continuation of what was set-up in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi fully reunites fans with Luke Skywalker after three decades. The films premise is already controversial with the ever-optimistic Jedi now sullen, reclusive and does not want to do anything with the ongoing fight between the Resistance and the First Order or the Jedi religion. Mark Hamill openly shared that he initially had some problems with it, but in the end, he relented to Johnsons vision for the character, which ultimately played a huge part in how the film plays out.
Now that the film is out in North America, CinemaScore reveals that the current trilogy sequel gets an A grade. For those not so familiar with how CinemaScore differs from other film movie sites, it seeks the opinion of filmgoers immediately after they leave a screening, asks them to rate the movie from A+ to F and the reason for seeing the title. The collected information is processed by the company and the results are posted every week. As for what the score means, it basically implies that the flick is generally good.

(16,888 posts)I can see how some folks might not be as enthusiastic but I dont see where the troll army of 0 stars on RT are coming from. If I had to wager a guess, and you may think Im crazy here but judging from some of the comments Ive seen on other sites regarding peoples complaints, the negative army are of the troll/4chan/alt righters...I know it sounds nutty but I think the overarching theme of the movie is what they view as a slap in the face. To me, the theme speaks to the true heart of The Force and the theme of the OT....maybe Im looking at it from our liberal perspective but thats the only thing that makes sense to me. May the Force Be With You, my friend...as always I appreciate your work here on DU! And Viva la Resistance!

I saw the film twice this weekend - once in 3D with my kids who prefer that format; and once in normal projection...and I LOVED it. No spoilers, but there are a number of very unexpected scenes and choices by Johnson that take the saga in a unique direction of his own...for some that is sacrilege, for others it is reformation...for me it just made for a damn enjoyable 152 minutes!!!
We need to get away from the internet for everything...too many unregulated, unaccountable idiots out there who like to ruin things for others as a way to exert power in an otherwise powerless existence.

The two most common criticisms about The Force Awakens are that it showed us nothing new, and that it was the same story as the first film.
Both of those complaints evaporate when you accept that the film serves as an in-canon reboot.
People also complained that the characters in The Force Awakens are flat and under-developed. I submit that these complainers do not remember the original film. With one exception, those characters were also poorly developed, and Solo only broke that mold because of the actor's considerable charm.
The Last Jedi shows us plenty that's new, and much of it is a profound departure both from the series to date and from the basic narrative structure of the earlier films. I enjoyed it from start to finish. It is, in fact, the only Star Wars film that has ever made me say "holy shit, now what will happen?"
For my money, it's not far removed from Empire in terms of quality.
