(12,225 posts)purposely antagonize the police with their rights. Maybe it's good sometimes to keep them on their toes, but it looks like a waste of time and tax dollars just so someone can get views on a video.

(20,542 posts)Love them, hate them, despise them
they are bringing the visibility and awareness to the RIGHT to film in public AT ANY TIME, the RIGHT to film the police at ANY TIME, the RIGHT to refuse to identify yourself if you are not LEGALLY REQUIRED to, the RIGHT to refuse illegal searches.
And if something is a RIGHT, it is NOT criminal, and therefor is NOT a reason for suspicion, questioning, etc.
Leave them alone. Observe if you (meaning the cops) want. If you observe something illegal
do what ya gotta do. But if someone is utilizing a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT and doing nothing illegal, piss off.

(4,032 posts)A business owner has the right to be concerned that someone is casing their joint or something else. He called the cops, who then have an obligation to ask questions. I felt the female officer was respectful and did ask for ID but did not demand it, never escalated the conversation.
And although the citizen was within his rights, he was being purposely evasive and not respectful of the business owners who felt threatened by his activity. A fine line may have been crossed, just as the Republican election auditors were pretty close to crossing line in AZ a couple of years ago.

(10,040 posts)and have absolutely no control over who can or cannot walk on them or what a person does while they are walking on them. They have no right to know who you are or what you are doing and you don't owe them any "respect" for anything. If they want privacy for their patrons they can draw the shades.
"It is a cordial conversation but your are trying run this conversation and that's not how this is going to go?"
That's "respectful" to you? Who does this LEO think they are talking to a law-abiding member of the public in this manner? They are not you mommy or daddy. Talk about "privilege". Taking pictures and/or video in a public place or of subjects that can be viewed from public spaces cannot be used as a pretense, in the guise of "suspicious activity", to initiate an investigation. Absent the suspicion of an actual crime being committed, you are under no obligation to say anything to them let alone provide ID. That's not being evasive that's exorcising your rights. We don't have "papers please" in the US. Finally, do you see the ridiculousness of walking up to someone who is obviously taking pictures and video and telling them you don't want to have a picture or video of you taken?
"And although the citizen was within his rights" is all that's required here. ...end of discussion. Know your rights. Use your rights.

(11,399 posts)With the exception of your claim that these people, with their deliberate confrontation, are performing any kind of service - to the public - to justice - to policing - or pretty much to anyone other than themselves. Attention seeking asshats - and that's about as far as it goes.
Far as I'm concerned - my neighborhood doesn't need your 'services.' Thanks.

(10,040 posts)which I don't believe Amagansett press is, do not provoke any confrontation whatsoever. Confrontation is brought upon them. I know you won't look into any of them but...
Long Island Audit
Bay Area Transparency
Honor Your Oath Civil Rights Investigations
The Battousai
Travis Heinze
...are all fantastic. Audit the audit, though not themselves auditors, is also quite good. Also, it helps to watch these videos in their entirety, rather than the sensational bits, in order to get a good understanding of what is transpiring and how it came about. As far as "my neighborhood doesn't need your 'services"; do you interact with public service agencies on a regular basis? Do you interact with local law enforcement on a regular basis? How do you know? These guys deal with probation offices, correctional facilities and agencies that provide public services/benefits. If these agencies treat members of the general public as poorly as I've seen in 1AA videos; how are they with the people who are under their thumbs? Travis Heinze and Honor Your Oath are regularly harassed by law enforcement because they are or appear to be homeless. This isn't just for your neighborhood. It's for everyone. Are there some bad, though totally legal, auditors out there? Yes, but that's true of everything.

(11,399 posts)and think they ought to rigorously defended by the courts. Where we part ways is in the efficacy (and, from what I've seen, I'll include sometimes 'intent') of these citizen patrols. (actually if they were in fact citizen patrols - and maybe 'documenting' open and pervasive criminal behavior on city streets and subways? - than that might actual have some positive effect!) But, as it stands - these people - I don't think they're helping.
