The thrust of the original party was the individual's primacy in all things and the dangers of the government, especially the federal government's, encroachment on the individual. it was a foolish notion which could not stand up to scrutiny, but at least it stood proudly for the sovereignty of the individual.

Now it supports state actions when those actions are against groups and individuals the libertarians oppose. The idea is no longer individual freedom but more like "I got mine and if you oppose me, I've also got kevlar, tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets for you." It's just so freaking weird that a party very closely akin, philosophically, with anarchy (in the sense of individual liberty and freedom from state oppression) has morphed into a party of power and oppression. Apparently, "all individuals are free, but some individuals are more free than others" in the libertarian mind. Your freedom is to shut up and accept. Their freedom is to do whatever the bloody hell they want to enrich themselves. Your freedom ends where it encroaches on their greed.

Many people would call it cutting and running with his tail between his legs, but I completely disagree. To me, it looks more like he kept his word, no?
