(205,234 posts)He totally "gets" American politics, despite only having been here since 2011. And I also credit him and The Daily Show for continuing to provide content despite having been off for the "holiday" week.

(205,234 posts)He completely "gets" American politics, despite only having been in the U.S. since 2011. That's not only a credit to him, but folks in other countries (including our fellow DUers) have an impressive understanding of what's going on here while most Americans don't follow foreign issues in the same way. And it's gotten worse with the advent of Trump, we used to see international news on a daily basis. These days, it's all Trump, all the time - each and every day he does something so outrageous and offensive that it's tough to cover it all.

(2,578 posts)He provides the perfect description of what is happening. I have not had a family wage job in my entire working career. It entails a kind of despair and hopelessness that has to be experienced to be really understood. I can't fathom having to deal with the kind of discrimination from racism on top of economic injustice and poverty. Racism and injustice destroy the social contract.

(205,234 posts)Maybe because of his background growing up in apartheid South Africa and coming to the U.S. in 2011. I grew up in what I thought was a fairly diverse community, but Trevor's experiences allow him to understand in a way that I never can.

(205,234 posts)He often shares his take on issues with the audience in his "Between the Scenes" segments. His show was preempted this week, but that didn't stop him from weighing in on an issue that he understands better than most.

(205,234 posts)There were violent thunderstorms, a tornado warning, and there are trees down all over, the major highway is closed in this area and there are a few thousand without power tonight, last I heard. It never rains, but it pours! But apparently no one was hurt, yet this was the last thing we needed on top of everything else!

(8,282 posts)Growing up near Lake Michigan we saw our share of tornadoes and downed trees.
Dont miss those sirens either, especially at night.
Be safe. Hugs xx

(205,234 posts)I took my dog out and don't see damage here, but I checked out the local news and the paper and just south of here many roads are still closed until they manage the clean up. It's a fairly rural area with a lot of woods and mountains so this isn't unusual. I can remember once last year having to take a lot of detours just to make it home!

(8,282 posts)getting home half lit at 2:30 am and the sirens went off at 3. What a headache that was, lol.
Have a good weekend.

(205,234 posts)The National Weather Service confirmed Saturday that a tornado touched down in Lake Luzerne on Friday evening.
The EF1 tornado touched down at 5:52 p.m. near the Hudson River close to Hawk Road, south of Call Street. It then moved in a northeast direction along those roads and both ends of Hartman Loop before continuing along Corinth Road, according to a summary provided by the National Weather Service.
The tornado then continued northeast and crossed the Northway at Exit 18, where it uprooted trees in the nearby cemetery. It ended in Glens Falls near The Queensbury Hotel at 6:05 p.m.
It traveled a distance of nearly 9 miles. EF1 tornados have winds of 86 to 110 miles per hour.
One home on Hartman Loop had damage to its roof. The storm caused many downed tree limbs and branches.
Warren County Public Works Superintendent Kevin Hajos said some of the worst damage was along Call Street and Corinth Road in Lake Luzerne and Queensbury and along Broad Street in Glens Falls.
It seems like it followed a path from Corinth kind of right through Main Street/Call Street into Glens Falls, he said.
There were a lot of trees and power lines down, according to Hajos. His crews worked with National Grid as late as 11 p.m. Friday assisting in the cleanup. They returned on Saturday to cut some of the trees and branches out of their way so they can get the trucks through.
