while many other officers "fear for their lives" even if a black person doesn't have a weapon.

our police officers are not trained nearly well enough in crisis situations. Officer Mader was trained by the Marines. we need crisis training and de-escalation training for our police officers.
the majority of police officers want to do a good job, but they are hindered by the ones that failed to stick in the military. the ones that watch too many movies like dirty harry and want to be the shoot first hero.
Officer Mader should have been given awards and held up as a role model for other officers.
in short, we need more stringent vetting process for hiring cops, and better training for the men and women that are hired. a periodic review of each police officer's records and actions also needs to happen across every department.

And by "act" they are trained to fire first. De-escalation is just not something they are trained to do -- in fact, in this case, they get fired if they make the attempt. The neanderthal police chief said that by not killing this suicidal man holding an empty gun, Officer Mader put other police officers' lives in jeopardy. Think about that for a second. Top cop tells the press that good cops kill, bad cops negotiate.
