FDR saved capitalism in the 1930s. In the 1940s he was tasked with saving the world. Yes, sorry, I may be a hopeless romantic, but when push came to shove, when the world hung in the balance, the Democratic Party answered the call of those who would rather die on their feet rather live on their knees.

(8,127 posts)A wealthy man who chose to abandon his social society that wealth provided, and brought the hatred of the people in those wealthy circles upon himself to help the average person. The work he did for the poor and elderly should never be forgotten.
He also welcomed the higher taxes he levied against his former social class, and had no problem paying his share of that high tax rate.
he welcomed corporate hate. they had finally met their maker. so they did the only thing they could do and added term limits to ensure no liberal who wins the hearts and minds of the middle class and poor could ever be continuously elected by that constituency ever again. its unfortunate the party forced him into abandoning his VP (Henry A. Wallace, who was a die hard liberal) in favor of Truman in his final term.

(41,105 posts)Combined with a Democratic Congress he was able to push through major programs beneficial to many Americans. But imperfect for sure regarding the rights and achievements of black people, women and minorities.
Those were desperate times during the Great Depression, powerful industrialists had attempted a 'Business Coup' in 1933 to oust FDR, and he knew it. The era of progressive advancement was peaking by then after much suffering, and since 1917 the fear of Bolshevism in Europe and the US was rising. Yet we're in very different times now, there's no comparison especially in terms of the decline in value and need for human labor.
And as to the war, I can't think of another public figure and leader who would have commanded US action in the Second World War as well as FDR, a leader like we'll never see again. When he made this speech in 1940 my grandparents were paying attention and so were my parents, then college students.
