1. Good stuff.

Back about 1977 I’d just started running a hotel bar in Virginia. One Friday morning I got a phone call from the manager of the house band, seems they’d come down with the flu and weren’t able to perform. He gave me the name of a booking agent who might be able to help. So, I called him and explained my plight, he grumbled that it was ridiculously short notice (I needed a band for that night and the following Saturday) but he’d see what he could do. He called back a couple hours later, said he’d talked to a kid in Newport News who was willing to play; the house band knew him and gave permission for him to use their equipment that was already set up on stage, saving everyone a lot of time. An hour before the entertainment was supposed to start the crowd had already overflowed into the adjacent dining room, and we had to call in extra bartenders and wait staff. It was a great weekend with the incredibly talented “kid from Newport News”.
