(16,906 posts)The pearly white smile on old Lefty Wilbury...my dad was responsible for that! (FYI...Lefty was Roy). My mom has a picture taken at one of Orbisons Xmas parties when I was a little boy and Im sitting on Santas lap...the role of Santa that evening was played by Orbisons neighbor Johnny Cash!

(3,827 posts)Imagine if these guys made albums into the 90s.
Very cool story- At first I was thinking you could be Rosanne Cash. And I didn't know Roy and Johnny were neighbors- Did Roy live in TN?

(16,906 posts)Roys first house next to John was much closer, but the house burned down, a tragic accident, and two of Roys sons were killed in the fire. John bought that property, and as a promise to Roy, built an orchard so that nothing but life would grow on the property...the only remnants are the stones from the chimney. Roys last home was built on the same road, adjacent to that property. Thats the house where the party took place.
I was a little kid then, but Dad told me years later that Roy had an affinity for me because I reminded him of one of the sons he lost in that fire.
The Cash home would be lost years later to fire during a renovation by then owner Barry Gibbs. All that remains is the stone foundation, the pool, and the stone wall that bordered the property...Roys house was owned by Marty Stuart and his wife, one of Cashs daughters, for a while but I couldnt tell you who owns it now, but its still a beautiful property. My wife and I joke all the time that well buy the Cash place when we win the lottery. Also, the orchard remnants remain untouched.
Irony of ironies, I suppose, when I moved back home last year, my wife and I bought a house that is a five min walk from those properties...we pass them every day taking our son to school.
Also, FWIW, if youve ever seen the movie Walk the Line the way they portray the Cash house is dang near spot on...they did a great job of showing the house and the dock and boat house on the lake. It remains one of the prettiest properties on Old Hickory Lake.

(16,906 posts)All credit to that band should go to George Harrison and Jeff Lynn, whom I refer to as the 6th beatle...hell half the time he sounds like Georges twin when he sings.
My dream now would be to at least meet Jeff Lynn. Sounds silly, but I missed out on George...but I had the privilege of meeting Petty and Dylan during the same summer. I was a lead tour guide at Graceland, the home of Elvis, during my early Med School summers and I gave private tours to both. Petty, a true gentleman, ask tons of questions about the house and me, and really was grateful for my time...not to say Dylan wasnt, Dylan was just Dylan. Im, admittedly, a huge Dylan fan and the morning I heard Id be giving him a tour of the house with his entourage I was scared shitless...cause I knew he had a reputation for clamming up whenever fans would fawn on him...so I kept it cool the whole tour and he didnt say one word the entire time. At the end, he took me aside and thanked me and I broke down...I said Ive got to say, Im a huge fan...but Im a fan because I found your music through musicians like Elvis and Ive been exposed to so many other amazing artists thanks to your music...I thought Id screwed up but we talked for probably twenty mins outside Graceland about our musical likes and dislikes back and forth...it was a magical night. I will say, as quirky as the guy is...Ive met up with him on his concert tours since then and hes always remembered me. Maybe a total coincidence but I was on the front row in Birmingham, Al several years ago and he nodded to me early on in the show...during a quite moment on the stage I screamed out Visions of Johanna and there was a delay in the song...he called over all the band members and then they started to play the my request...the only time it was played during that tour.
Guess I feel like my bucket list needs a face to face with Jeff Lynn to be complete...guess I need to invest in plane tickets to a concert in the UK!

(4,940 posts)And to Tom - say hey to George and Roy and Jeff. Add hello to Elvis, Michael, and please give John a hug for me.
Thank you for who you were, Tom. My daughter used to say in a big apartment complex - you can hear mom coming cuz she's got it cranked and it's Petty. Anything on that poor old (now dead) car stereo was cranked.

(2,050 posts)Wilburys Vol 1 is on the turntable right now, then on to Toms catalog.
And tonight I'll watch concert footage, and maybe "The Postman".
I can't be too sad, as I'll celebrate his life instead.....

(2,396 posts)It's the day after so I think I have processed the initial emotions both from the LV shooting and Tom's death.
I feel so lucky to have grown up during the years that all these artists first came upon the scene. I think my teen+ heart attached itself to music in a different way than I do as an adult.
I did just score the CD "The Very Best of ELO"
at Rite-Aid for $4.79
Thank you so much for posting. You really made my day
