Amber Lyon, award-winning investigative journalist and filmmaker, joins Thom Hartmann. Something is happening in Anaheim, California - despite a complete blackout from the mainstreem media. Take a look at some of these pictures by award-winning investigative journalist Amber Lyons from Anaheim over the weekend. When we hear terms like militarized police - this is what comes to mind. Officers decked out in full military gear as though they're about to be deployed to Afghanistan. So what's behind this? Why are militarized police on patrol in Anaheim? Well - Sunday marked the ninth straight day that local citizens took to the streets to protest police brutality. Nine days after police shot an unarmed man - 25-year-old Manuel Diaz - in the back of the head killing him. Since that shooting...the streets of Anaheim have been the scene of mostly peaceful protests that have at times turned violent in response to heavy handed police crackdowns. Last week - this was the scene in Anaheim - as police in riot gear fired less lethal projectiles like bean bags and pepper balls indiscriminately into crowds of people. 24 people were arrested that night - storefront windows were smashed, and fires were started. And last night - as hundreds poured into the streets for a peaceful march and ceremony for Manuel Diaz - they were once again met with Anaheim police equipped with full military gear. Nine people were arrested on Sunday.

(32,723 posts)Yup. I'll tell you what calmed people down the most.
When the FBI announced it would look into the shooting.

(51,771 posts)The local paper, a right wing rag called the Orange County Register, has carried articles about it, but generally buried, and with a spin about how the protests are the work of outside troublemakers.

(60,010 posts)I saw it on the web, and was taken aback by how it emphasized "outside agitators".
that same phrase was used for many demonstrations and strikes over the years, going back to the
Wobblies strikes in my hometown on the West Coast. ( "outside agitators" were then identified as Communists)
Thus the point of the demonstration is removed as a focus and instead the dangers of "outside demonstrators" is emphasized.
More recently, remember that NYC and Oakland both pointed to "outside agitators".

(21,236 posts)Very disturbing to see this. Is it being covered on the local media in LA? Maybe they are ignoring it so more people don't get involved. After what they did to the occupy movement they don't want to stir up the hornets nest again maybe?

(9,748 posts)The NRA likes to brag about training African-Americans in the old South during the civil rights struggle in regions where the sheriff's department was packed with KKK members.
But that was then, and this is now. Not entirely certain how the NRA came to be so rightwing, but they did. So, no, you are not going to see the NRA helping "those people".

(12,977 posts)I think that's highly overstated and hysterical at this point -- but that admitted, there are certainly some strange things going on out there.
One key to the situation may be that Anaheim combines Disneyland, wealthy suburbs, and a population that is more than 50% Hispanic and moderately impoverished. Not only is that a volatile mixture, but we've seen that the tendency towards repression is particularly strong when tourism is threatened.
Also, the media are definitely less interested when there are no cute white girls being teargassed.
This is definitely one to keep an eye on.

(25,111 posts)but my understanding is that it may blow-up into a full riot on the scale of the LA riots if the police and community don't try and have a civil discussion.
I was a teenager when the LA riots happened and many family members lived thru both riots (Watts). I pray that this one won't go that far.

(8,244 posts)The channels like fox , abc, nbc, cbs, cnn, are not covering it enough.
And when they do, they are rather one sided, protecting the police I think.

(1 post)This is frightening. Thanks for exposing it! I lived in that area for years and have never seen anything like this.
