Related: About this forumA Relic from the First Korean War era...
A few days ago I recieved this via wheeebay -
A 1950 Raytheon (major arms manufacturer - think Patriot and Tomahawk missiles.)
Ordered it weeks ago.
The Korean War kicked off in 1950.
Truman was President.
Joe McCarthy was on a roll.
Now I'm hoping this wasn't an ill omen.
A beautiful piece of living history,
and a reminder.

(9,740 posts)We listened to newscasts on a radio much like that one. Also, of course, I listened to "The Lone Ranger" and "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon." Thanks for sharing.

Korea wasn't as long as Vietnam or Afghanistan, but I believe took us to the brink of all out thermonuclear war.

(4,642 posts)the tube era radios with the old style rectifiers should survive the electromagnetic pulse during a nuke attack. Any close nukes would probably take out most solid state equipment. I've got quite a few tube radios from the 20's to the 50's but won't be coming with me when I move. Yard sell thursday.

(33,982 posts)Should be one at 640khz and another at 1240khz. It's a triangle with a "CD" for Civil Defense in it.
(It might not have the markings, if it's actually a 1950, as CONELRAD was put together in 51.)

(19,661 posts)Barely.
I have a J.C. Penneys portable transistor with the Conelrad markings.
My Grundig 2440u import has them as well.
Interesting point!
