(19,205 posts)but without a close examination of the "Ivory", you wouldn't be able to tell is it's a composite or the real thing. I've seen some amazing copies done in composite, right down to the grain and yellowing of the composite. Like I said, I'm not trying to defend HIM, I'm just trying to interject useful information. Ivory is illegal only if it was harvested after 1976 (I believe). If this piece has been in his family or he bought it before 1976 it's perfectly legal. THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT RIGHT! I'm certainly NOT sticking up for the Ivory trade in any way, shape, or form. I find it disgusting that a beautiful, intelligent creature, such as an elephant, would be killed just for it's tusks. If I had my way, all of it would be confiscated and returned to the country of origin. It's not that great of a medium for artwork, it's just rare and expensive, which makes the people for which that matters want it all the more. You know, Republicans.

Right now the elephant population has starting to go through an inbreeding because there is not enough bull elephants to mate with the females------------- and China is the main culprit in this industry, right along with rhino horns and shark fins.
