(9,314 posts)turn out for the President. Wish I could have been there but no way I could physically stand that long.
My parents who used to vote Republican called me to make sure I knew Pres. Obama was going to be on television. They've both done a complete turnaround in their politics within the last 5 years.....they are 85 years old.
My brother has been converted to liberal as well just within the last couple of years. He was pretty right wing but no longer. He now wants to get involved with an organization that works for WOMEN'S RIGHTS. Folks - that's a miracle on the level of the parting of the Red Sea.
One person at a time - that's how you change things.

(53,661 posts)That's 4 in my family I've helped to convert. I have a long way to go but all of the older generation - my dad's siblings, are saying they will NEVER vote for a Republican again. Of course, they may not have many more elections in their lifetime but that's okay....they are spreading the word.
I believe the biggest obstacle in most of Virginia to it turning blue is the churches. For the most part the churches are full of right-wing Republicans and somehow people have confused politics with religion.

(129,875 posts)Watched it live on CSPAN and the camera refused to pan out over that crowd.... naturally. That's how I usually know when it is packed and jammed! They'll never have that many for Rmoney.
Thank you Roanoke for representin' that part of the state of VA!!

(21,478 posts)Theft is in the air, as it was in 2000 in Florida and 2004 in Ohio. This time it will be more powerfully financed than ever. If they "win," they will disenfranchise voters to a degree that they will never have to worry again.

I only campaigned locally. I cannot imagine a campaign on the national level.

(713 posts)My hometown is Roanoke Virginia, but I'm a New Englander now. Last night before bed I made the mistake of logging onto facebook and I saw where some people I grew up with and went to school with were posting all kinds of crap about why in the world would anyone go see Obama, and how they wouldn't vote for him if they were paid to...just stupid, negative, blind and small minded comments. And knowing these people, some of them well, although I no longer associate with them, I knew the reason why they would never consider voting for Obama. It made me sick. So thank you again for posting all these wonderful pictures and restoring some of the faith I had lost over the years in my hometown and my home state!

(9,314 posts)I'm going to volunteer to work at the local Democratic Headquarters and then again at the polls. I might sign up to do a 4 hour stint at the polls and then a 4 hour stint driving people to the polls.
The importance of Obama taking the state of Virginia cannot be stressed enough.
(fellow Virginian here!)
I'm betting our POS guv will be the Veep pick. Gawd knows, he's used his whole governorship as one long audition. "Bob's for Jobs" for himself ans screw the rest of us.

(9,314 posts)jerk wants it, but I don't see that he would bring anything to the table for Romney.
Have you ever noticed how the governor looks like every extra that played an SS officer in a war film?
As a fellow Virginian I share the same concern. However McDonnell is the male version of Palin and the press won't put up with the bs this time. Also Biden would eat McDonnell alive in thr debate. Virginia politics do not play well outside the state.
