Europe’s “Hot Spot” Refugee Registration Centers are “Concentration Camps”

By Yanis Varoufakis

Published on Apr 28, 2016

http://democracynow.org - We speak with former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis about the refugee crisis in Europe, and so-called "hot-spots" that are registration centers for refugees in his country. "George Orwell would be very proud of Europe and our capacity for doublespeak and creating new terms by which to hide the awful reality," Varoufakis says. "When you see the word ‘hot spots,’ just translate it to 'concentration camps.'" He says the Greek government has been pressured to intern the refugees fleeing war and famine, and notes the growth of right-wing parties in Europe, such as Golden Dawn.

these facilities to concentration camps. Greeks had their taste of Nazi 'mercies'. An epic fail.

2. I guess you haven't seen all the reports and videos of their suffering.

Guess what ........... 'concentration camps' applies to more than just those who the Nazi's tortured and murdered.

Your lack of empathy is ................................................................ pathetic.

3. Give it a break. Concentration camps is a term that has a specific, historical meaning.

Please show me some of the other 'legitimate' uses of the term not referring to the Nazi concentration camps. He's way out of line using it as political hyperbole to try and prove whatever point he thinks he's making. So no, I have absolutely no empathy for him for this botched try.

You should try for a trifecta next time.

I don't get that ........... meanness and ignorance just for the sake of it. Not a single thought as to the video, their circumstances or anything else.

I lost relatives fighting the Nazi's, one taken prisoner to starve in a prisoner camp and finally killed. Take your fake outrage over a word somewhere else.

7. High drama. My quarrel is not with the video, or circumstances

or anything else. As I said very clearly from the onset, my quarrel is with a Greek politician who tries to score cheap points by labeling these facilities "concentration camps". These places are in fact very much like the Displaced Persons Camps (DP's) estabished all over Europe after WW II. I have never heard anyone refer to those as "concentration camps". And, on the subject of concentation camps, almost all of my Father's side of the family was exterminated by the Nazis, some in the real concentration camps.Fake outrage???? You should be ashamed.
