New Year's Eve is the worst. John Oliver has some great excuses for getting out of it.

1. He rocks!

2. Love John Oliver! He nails what I've felt about New Year's Eve for over forty of

my adult years. Just wish I'd heard his suggestions years ago. After a few years of going out to awful, crowded parties and even worse club celebrations, we finally hit on putting out a simple spread and bar at home, then inviting our friends to drop in and out at will on their way to or from other celebrations. (They were welcome to hang around if they wanted, but we weren't putting ourselves out anymore than for any casual evening at home. Maybe a crockpot of pork and sauerkraut along with the chips and dip). TV or records/tapes. That was all, and worked beautifully for years. We never had to dress up or hit the roads on "amateur night."

5. I'm with JO. I hate NYE.

I make it a personal requirement to stay HOME with my cats. And then the fuggin maniacs w/ their idiot fireworks scare the shit out of them - but at least I'm there with them and not out with people I have no desire to be with and milling around in the drunken puke sewage of the evening.

6. I had a narrow miss coming home from my job as a DJ in a club one New Years Eve.

Due to a lot of cops being out (my main worry) I was on the freeway in the slow lane (rare for me in those days) when I topped an overpass and a car going very fast was going the wrong way in the fast lane. It was going past before I realized it. I exited and went to a pay phone and called 911 to report it, I was too late, they killed 4 people. I have stayed home ever since!
I even had a boss invite me out in his Limo, he bragged that it was big, hard to miss etc., still no. He never even made it to his party and spent hours waiting for cops and a tow after a drunk ran the limo into a ditch.

7. Yikes!

That's exactly the right reason for staying off the road on New Year's, of all nights.

I read an article recently that said staying out of the left lane was the best way to avoid wrong way drivers, since that's where they usually are. That's an incredibly sad story, but I'm glad to hear you're okay...
