I'm making a dupe thread on this RT video to show you how some things just don't change. In 1903, Russian intelligence agencies created the most famous hoax in history, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which help justify the wave of anti-Jewish pogroms throughout Russia and Europe and influenced Hitler's argument for the Holocaust. Russia is now trotting out a Ron Paul supporter here to spout the usual tripe about the "Jewish Lobby," a dog whistle term for those conspiracy theorists who claim the Jews control the world and other anti-Semitic BS. I'm pretty pissed that this dangerous trash is being allowed on DU so I am making this dupe to let you know: Don't be fooled, Russia Today is trash.
If you care about this dangerous anti-Semitic BS woowoo by RT & a Ron Paul supporter, go to the other DU video and click "alert" and tell the mods of DU to get their act together and stop allowing videos from a totalitarian regime (RT is officially funded by the Kremlin to give Putin's twisted worldview) on DU: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1017197229. Select the second option on the alert screen, "This discussion thread is off-topic, or violates the Statement of Purpose for this forum," and send an alert to the hosts pointing out the "woowoo" conspiracy theory anti-Semitic propaganda directly created a totalitarian regime.
Usually I stay cool but I'm thinking now of my Jewish friends and how some of them have to live in fear, and I'm thinking of that shooting on the Jewish center in Kansas recently, and I'm getting pretty pissed off here. WTF why doesn't DU mods just do the right thing and stop having all these crap RT vids prominently on the homepage?
Update: more on the RW nutter that RT cherrypicked. Below are his actual words from his blog.

(3,982 posts)Sourcewatch is extremely progressive and they have a pretty detailed wiki about this. Essentially Al-Qaida really was not actually a real movement, but a loose group of a extremists. Of course now, after years of war, there really is a huge movement of extremists in their place.
It doesn't take "RT" to point that out - It has been well known in the liberal/progressive community.

I agree w/you about RT--it is Russian State television, straight to you via the good offices of Vlad Putin and his FSB goons.

(904 posts)I'm not with you regarding RT.
When you advocate censorship of an entire media outlet, you advocate a behavior which is consistent with the totalitarian regimes you say you abhor. (Don't get me wrong - I don't like 'em, either). And if you're using the ownership argument, then in the interest of being intellectually honest, you should apply the same standard to other outlets like Al Jazeera, BBC, and all of the domestic (read: corporate-backed) megaphones. I believe that our domestic outlets also put out propaganda, reflective of their corporate ownership, and that it can be just as harmful as anything put out by RT.
Don't get me wrong - Putin is bad news. I'm aware of his government's treatment of their LGBT population, and I find it morally repugnant, as well.
We have every right to call foul on media content we may disagree with. I would submit that one of the very reasons for this discussion board's existence is to do just that. But banning an entire media outlet? I don't think so.

(5,756 posts)I'm pretty sure the gentleman stated facts, not theories in his interview. Not once did he disparage the Israelis. He simply stated facts that are undeniable with regard to how the US and the UN have treated Israel.
He clearly stated "Israel is not the problem." A direct quote from the interview. I'm not sure how he could state it in a manner that does not condemn Israel better than that. Did you miss that part of the interview?
The REAL problem is US foreign policy. Our need to dominate every other nation on the planet to the benefit of our multi-national corporations.

Did you listen to the same video?

(8,821 posts)That not only takes the entire thing out of context, but also fundamentally changes its meaning. Why don't you remove the ellipses and show the quote as it was actually written?
Behind the Aegis
(54,044 posts)The ellipses represent pause. If you bothered to listen to the time stamp I gave, you will see it is a word for word translation, no fancy double-speak or misdirection needed.
another_liberal
(8,821 posts)Not parts of two quotes.
If the two aren't separate, why can't you off the complete sentence, or sentences. The way it appears now suggests you want to alter the original meaning.

(54,044 posts)Watch the damn thing. He was speaking, caught himself about to say "Jews", changed it to "Jewish American leaders", then finished his thought. The way it appears now is you want to claim it isn't clearly what it is in order to hide the anti-Semitic bent to it. YOU are the only claiming it was two different quotes cobbled together, but anyone who actually watched it would know YOU are not reporting correctly. Hell, you don't even have to watch the whole thing, it is right at the beginning of the segment. I even gave you the call numbers! Why do you keep quoting YOURSELF as if to imply it is something I said?!
(1:28-1:37) "The real problem are the Je---(pause) is the leaders of the American-Jewish community in the United States who influence and corrupt our Congress to support Israel when we have no interest there."

(5,756 posts)Perhaps you should watch the interview before you condemn RT. Are you categorically condemning Al Jazera and the BBC too? Both of those networks tend to report things you will never see on the US MSM and not at all flattering to the US.

(55,981 posts)If one makes an alert that claims an OP will ruin DU forever, the hosts cant help unless the OP actually violates the SOP.
A problem we have in DU is that there are a number of people that become convinced that they know when something should be locked/hidden/banned and wont listen to anyone that disagrees. This is conservative behavior and doesnt belong in DU. This is a site for politically liberals that dont obsess over alerting/locking/hiding/banning.

You are wise to alert less knowledgeable members to the fact that RT is Russian State owned. I don't agree with much we hear on CNN or Faux News. I'm often shocked by the Republican propaganda Joe Scarbourgh spouts on MSNBC.
I monitor the site for tidbits into the thinking of czar putin. There is one talk show of value. "Worlds Apart" with Oksana Boyko, atheist and feminist. She has guests who challenge the "Duma" way of thinking. You should watch the interviews with US Professor Khruscheva, and others who shred both RT and Putin.
Also, see the link below for other sources of those who are willing to speak truth to Russian power, and the consequences.
