(3,626 posts)can do no right. Imagine the uproar from both sides if P.O.W. Bergdahl had died in captivity, which was apparently a distinct probability. The RW would be screaming the loudest. Regardless of the circumstances of Bergdahl's capture, erring to save his life is the only proper direction the president could take. Sort out all the details later. Just my opinion.

(9,214 posts)I have to agree in part with Cruz. But Ted, what is the alternative to being close enough to the enemy to be captured and not being captured?
Ted, if one of our soldiers is not valuable enough to be captured then what will the enemy do to them? Do you think the enemy will just let them walk away?
I hope all of our soldiers are valuable enough to be captured instead of so much of a liability that they are killed on the spot.

(17,635 posts)Really, they've been thinking, "ah well no use capturing Americans, ya know, no propaganda value at all. Nope, none."
This is what I don't get about this particular reich-wing talking point.

(6,119 posts)I have never seen one acknowledge this inconvenient arms for hostages FACT. They are entitled to their own facts. Even St. Ronnie of Rayguns didn't cleanly admit their crimes and the obedient press buried it.
Imagine what a different world we would live in if the press had spent as much time on that as they did on a stained black dress.

(9,748 posts)They had a ten year war going on at the time. Iraq was armed by the Soviet Union. While Iran was burning through the American weaponry and equipment left behind by the Shah. They needed re-armed. And in that time and place, Iran was the enemy of our enemy-by-proxy. Strange bedfellows and all that.

(82 posts)I am wondering just how democratic this is
"Many of Bergdahl's fellow troops -- from the seven or so who knew him best in his squad to the larger group that made up the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division -- told CNN that they signed nondisclosure agreements agreeing to never share any information about Bergdahl's disappearance

http://www.nytimes.com/1987/01/11/us/mcfarlane-took-cake-and-bible-to-teheran-ex-cia-man-says.html
...According to a person who has read the committee's draft report, the retired C.I.A. official, George W. Cave, an Iran expert who was part of the mission, said the group had 10 falsified passports, believed to be Irish, and a key-shaped cake to symbolize the anticipated ''opening'' to Iran.
These and other details of the secret American operation are discussed at length in the report, but much of the material has already appeared in public in the more than two months since the revelations began with publication of a story about the McFarlane mission in a small Beirut weekly. In effect, the report supplies a useful chronology of the events.
The rather bizarre details of the McFarlane mission were first made known by the Iranian Speaker of Parliament, Hojatolislam Hashemi Rafsanjani, on Nov. 4, when the secret operation first became known. Hojatolislam Rafsanjani also said that the Americans had been disguised and that they had carried sets of Colt pistols as gifts. But these details were not confirmed in the report.
Nevertheless, until the committee's report began to circulate in Washington, all the Iranian assertions about the McFarlane mission were either derided as fanciful or not confirmed. Today, a senior State Department official independently confirmed that Mr. McFarlane, a former national security adviser, did carry the Reagan Bible as authentication for the group. But he said he was not sure about the cake and declined to discuss the passports....

In January 1984, Jesse Jackson travelled to Libya and Syria within a party of approximately 20 volunteers including; Wyatt T Walker, Jeremiah Wright and Louis Farrakhan. The mission's peaceful purpose was accomplished, as they secured the release of Goodman.[2][3]

(9,748 posts)The hostages were in Lebanon. The Iran-Contra affair began years after Reagan paid ransom for the embassy personnel. The hostage takers in Lebanon were backed by Iran, but the hostages were in Lebanon.

(8,200 posts)I am especially concerned that those who had served with him are denouncing him as a deserter and traitor. The fact that six lost their lives searching for him is also very disturbing. President Obama had better have a through explanation beyond "we don't leave soldiers behind." The timing is critical with the elections coming in the fall. If this can not be fully justified, I fear that he could have damaging consequences for our Democratic candidates. There is little doubt that our enemies, the Republicans, will welcome this as God send. Yes, I consider the present day Republicans to be actual enemies of the Republic and just as much a threat as any of the terrorists that want to see us destroyed. The Islamic terrorists are driven be extreme religious views, while the Republicans are driven by unbridled greed.

(750 posts)One of my favorite songs from the band called the Who
Sometimes I relate songs made a while ago to this generation of politics. It is also to do with new word I learned called non-purposive.
Applying this to both parties is difficult because of so many secrets done in war.
Here is combat soldier being characterized after several years captive. In that every minute of captivity was told any moment he may die if he does not assimilate.
This whole picture of this news flushes out a lot of new rhetoric. That could be pure politics, and for the next few years ferret out the news media as the liars they are about the greatest hoax of a war in the recorded history of America.
The Republicans of today, not the Eisenhower Republicans, have always been there like you see them now it is only the media have covered for their non-purposive arguments that are non-cognitive descriptions that are self-evident that have no purpose for the life domain Ike knew it very well by describing it as the military industrial complex. Ike warned us, and now that very media, with the legal system are the very key players in deception.
Now the media in Chicago making allegation a young man was a deserter builds a very dark cloud of shame that projects for crazy deals like trading hostages.
The media as liars as key players for the industrial complex have no recourse but to add shame or dishonor and give a platform to crazy political operatives like Cruz. Thats the real shame.
In the last analysis, as in the title for The Audacity of Hope President Obama should start to disseminate secret war issues that the public should know.
I would like to know what Snowden has as secrets, because I have a right to know why Snowden did what he did.
When the war is over these secrets will come out. I pray to God before I die I to know about the liars in the greatest war hoax in American history.
Yes, reveal secrets that would destroy the corruption that permeates with abandon and recklessness now in the Congress and the Senate.
