In late 2012, The Library of Congress announced that Carole King had been named the 2013 recipient of the prestigious Gershwin Prize for Popular Song - the first woman to receive the distinction given to songwriters for a body of work. "Carole King has been one of the most influential songwriters of our time," Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said in a statement accompanying the announcement. "For more than five decades, she has written for and been recorded by many different types of artists for a wide range of audiences, communicating with beauty and dignity the universal human emotions of love, joy, pain and loss. Her body of work reflects the spirit of the Gershwin Prize with its originality, longevity and diversity of appeal." President and Mrs. Barack Obama hosted the Gershwin Award concert at the White House May 22, 2013, when the President presented the Gershwin Award to Carole King. .[62] In June 2013 she campaigned in Massachusetts for US Representative Ed Markey, the Democratic nominee in a special election for the US Senate to succeed John Kerry who had resigned to become Secretary of State.
Carole King will be honored as MusiCares Person of the Year in January 2014.[63]

(4,775 posts)I met him once in Bolinas in the 80's when I lived nearby. Probably one of the most down-to-earth and genuine celebrities anywhere, one of my all-time favorites. Cool that you got to hang out with him. Where's that house, if I may ask?

(17,136 posts)And here's to all of us- a hand shake and a pat on the back. Every day we wake up and we do our best.
Nice house- you walk up the sidewalk and open the door you're *home*. And that's good for your soul. Open the windows at night and the crickets play a symphony for you. Wake up in the morning and the birds are singing with the joy of another new day.

(10,597 posts)I always knew you was special, but now I know why. Like minds, same era. Great OP, Ichingcarpenter. I love that version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Played the Uke when I was a whipper-snapper. Don't know what ever became of that little bit of strings. I'm sure I bestowed it upon someone who promised to learn how to play it, as I did with other instruments. Again, thanks for the memories. It was a pretty good ride, I must say.

(10,597 posts)Anyone, and I mean a-n-y-o-n-e, can learn to play that sweet little thing. I have uncles (more like cousins in age) who used to show off for us when they came home from college, playing the uke and singing Trini Lopez's "Lemon Tree." Time warps can go either way, but yours seem to be headed in the right direction.
Hope you don't mind if I tag along behind..

Carry On
Oh, when our struggle's over and we all are free,
When the new day's dawnin', think of me.
It's been a long time comin' but I won't be there,
When you see the sun risin' think of me.
Oh, think of me and carry on!
Oh, think of me and carry on!
And when the storm clouds gather and you've lost your way
When you need a light to guide you, think of me.
And though you may grow weary from your work each day
If you need a hand to help you, think of me.
Oh, think of me and carry on!
Oh, think of me and carry on!
Oh, when our struggle's over and we are all free,
When the new day's dawnin', think of me.
It's been a long time comin' but I won't be there,
When you see the sun risin', think of me.
Oh, think of me and carry on!
Oh, think of me and carry on!
And when the storm clouds gather and you've lost your way
When you need a light to guide you, think of me.
And though you may grow weary from your work each day,
If you need a hand to help you, think of me.
Oh, think of me and carry on!
Oh, think of me and carry on
And carry on!
