(40,416 posts)Ava Gardner deserved an Oscar. And who knew that Fred Astaire could turn in such a fine dramatic portrayal?
It's a gem, IMHO. With a devastating tag line.
And of course there's Anthony Perkins, Gregory Peck, and some pretty awesome character roles.
The scene between Admiral Bridie and his ever loyal secretary Lieutenant Hosgood near the end of the movie never fails to bring a tear or two. It's an understated, but powerful scene.
Neville Shute didn't like Stanley Kramer's final version, but it is Hollywood, after all, and Kramer was never one to ignore the opportunity to send a message.
Of this genre, my favorite is Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove. Others include Fail-Safe and a minor gem, Miracle Mile.
Glad to support another WWIII flick fan.

(5,927 posts)The beautiful B&W cinematography...the absolutely CHILLING music by the wonderful Ernest Gold...I'm very sentimental about this movie because I watched it with my Dad when I was quite young.
IMHO one of the best.
The wonderful scenes at the exclusive club wherein the two old gentlemen complain about how much port was left; the waiter at the club, after everybody's gone home to die, finally getting to shoot billiards for himself for once; and when he hits the ball the lights go out...just brutal watching the world fall apart all around everybody as they try to maintain some equilibrium. Scared the pants off me.
Also the looks at an empty San Francisco through the periscope....my blood runs cold.
