I happened to be pregnant at the time they discovered the disease in our donor blood supply.

I had placenta previa at the time and kept losing lots of blood. But they had NOT developed anyway to detect the disease yet. So, I kept bleeding and bleeding, hoping with each episode that I wouldn't lose so much blood that they would risk infecting me and the baby with the disease. It was the scariest experience I have ever lived through. Several times, my husband found me lying in a pool of blood unconscious.

But the baby and I survived without any blood transfusions.

People thought of the disease as only something that affected the GLBT community or people with risky behaviors. But they were very, very wrong.
