As in, "don't expect government to solve problems, because we sure aren't planning to."

But distrust of government is not only healthy, it is the very reason we have three branches theoretically marshaled by checks and balances, and the very reason we have elections.

The kind of distrust the GOP foments is the opposite of healthy. It's superstition rather than skepticism.

Ron Johnson ran against, and "replaced", Senator Russ Feingold, one of the best Senators ever.

When "stupid" speaks its mind, rather than just mouthing talking points, its real goals become apparent.

Whoever runs against Ron Johnson in 2016 should keep a copy of this comment to run in their ads.

Ordinary citizens should be distrustful of gov't because we have reason to be.

But where Ron Johnson is wrong is that people who work in government should give us reasons to trust them.

He doesn't get that by destroying the commons he does not make life better for anyone, even his 1% bosses.

Nor does he get that his wealth only exists because of the rules that his 1% bosses have paid guys like him to put in place.

My wife tells me of a group of her professional colleagues who, as representatives of the state association, went to visit him in his DC office. They wanted to talk to him about women's issues and choice. When he found out what they were there for he shut the door on them, would not even entertain their viewpoint.

Makes me want to ultrasound his ***.

It's obvious what he's doing here, he's trying to be clever.

But because he's such a fucking moron, the only level of cleverness that he can achieve is irony.

That's right, Ron Johnson is moronically ironic. At least he's accomplished something.

Ron Johnson is the poster child of how the GOP has fucked up this country since the "Contract on America" in 1994. This is why Bob Dole thinks the Republican Party has lost it collective mind. Johnson is also a shining reminder that when anyone votes for a current Republican, they are voting for obstructionism and for a party that will NEVER cooperate in fixing any of the problems the nation and the world face.

engender public distrust for their organization?

Why is it that a certain segment of people want to run the government and at the same time get people to distrust it?

At best, it means they're lazy and uncommitted to their job; at worst, it means they're actively trying to sabotage it.

The classic example from the UK is UKIP members of the Europaean Parliament, who get elected on the basis of hating the EU, but are only too happy to ride the Euro-gravy-train; and yes, some of them get elected!

(Having looked up this bloke on Wikipedia - people actually chose THAT, when they could have had Russ Feingold? Churchill was quite right, when he said that democracy is the worst possible system except for all the others!)

And it turns out the one person the honest, naive protagonist should really, really not trust is the very guy who said that. (Think Petyr "Little Finger" Baelish in Game of Thrones.)

This guy says, "Don't trust any politician, so vote for me!"

How can you expect good government if you vote for people who don't believe good government is possible?

They get these dufus clowns that come in and stir the pot with their insults and wild shooting, case in point: allen west; and then they get tossed out on their ears once the public see what a dunce they really are. West was even in a very red district.

Does this ass-wipe actually have a good chance to return to Washington after his six years of stupid are up?

I heard some conservative the other day say something like "Government is most effective when its focused on a smaller set of tasks". That's what conservatives should focused on, a core set of government priorities they do really well. The idea that its somehow a win when a government program messes up isn't an ideological stance, its sabotage. No one in their constituency is voting for them to make expensive messes out of taxpayer programs so we will distrust government down the road. They are voting for them to show how powerful and comprehensive a more focused approach can be. They should all know that.
