(134 posts)This is another reason, why I personally despise religion. Most conservative constitutionalist only care about certain amendments and certain parts of the Bible. I love it when pastors like John Hagee speak about sharing gods love, yet he calls socialism a work of the devil. Also I personally love the free porn provided to us by our school systems in America. Great video man, I cant tell you just how much I loved it!

(248 posts)Yeah, most Christian Conservative "Constitutionalists" pick out the parts of the Bible they like and which they don't like. And, exactly, how can a true Christian hate "Socialism" when everything Jesus taught was about giving to the poor, and spreading the wealth equally. And, yep, sex education is porn man. It's all part of the Illuminati conspiracy to desensitize children to sex and make them have sex in order to get abortions at Obamas' abortion clinics. Thank you for enjoying it!

(20,166 posts)if the current unraveling of our institutions continues and those of us on the left don't do anything to fill the void that's being created, this kind of reactionary "thaw" crap may actually be appealing to some kids who want something that gives them meaning and a place to belong.

(492 posts)Just sayin' -- I don't think proper flag protocol permits using it as a cheap stage-prop. And the melting ice seemed to be soaking it at the end, like an old rag or beach towel.

(9,115 posts)Their video deserved the crushing rebuke you administered.
They're pushing the 'christian soldier' idea heavily, with the 'C-4' and 'army of god' references.
Laying the US flag on the ground, then soaking it with the water flow from their 'thaw' was an interesting visual image choice for the film makers. Imagine the hysterical outraged outcry from the repugs, if any other group of people in the US had disrespected our flag this way. But it's o.k. to desecrate the flag if you're a young repug 'christian' fascist tool.

Unbelievable.

(9,115 posts)about 'in the old days, no public school student would dare not stand and put his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegiance to the flag'. While the vid shows the flag being desecrated. Some double think from the same crowd that gave us the anti-flag burning amendment. The same party who made such a big deal about Obama's lack of flag pin, the same party who gave us Palin signing her autograph on an American flag.
To them, the flag represents them, their control over our country, their 'values'. Anyone disrespecting it, disrespects them and their power. But they are free to desecrate it any time they want.

(5,106 posts)method of disposing of a worn-out American flag was to BURN it. This has bothered me from the time "flag burning" became an issue, but no one else I've ever mentioned it to remembers. Anyone? Bueller?

(9,115 posts)Something that shouldn't touch the ground, and can't be burned, is pretty tough to dispose of. Can't throw it in the garbage, instead.

I think the original 'flag burning' protests were designed to say the flag had been soiled, worn out, and dishonored by the use to which it was put by flag waving war mongers. I don't think they burned it like burning an effigy.

(787 posts)a poor execution. I'm sorry Man, Stupid is not a good argument. Calling Stupid in a discussion or debate is a recipe for disaster.
So,ask yourself, Are they Stupid? Truth is, they read the script and acted in this (rather Lame) Video well enough. So I would say they are not stupid. What they are they are is; sad, ill informed, ignorant, and Propagandized. To call these Children Stupid will waste your time, and forces them, and those like them, to dig their heels in, and shut you out. Now you can't get through to them. So what can you do to enlighten them?
The best tactic here is to attack the behavior, Bigotry) and the argument, Christians are frozen out of National Discussions / and the society in general.) not the individuals carting water for these rather lame arguments.
To be successful at reversing this programing, you must show them they are not well enough informed. IOW they have been lied too. (Truth does have a Liberal Bias.) which you have done well enough, But even their you must tread carefully, as they might feel you are attacking a favored Parent, Teacher, or Minister.
You have done some of this rather well, however you do need for an editor. (Not a censor.) an editor, someone who can take your good arguments organize them, remove the profanity, and name calling. Yes, I know They are Bigoted! But then again this is the results of Propaganda not stupidity. An editor will Help you word your script better. Remember, Your Task here is to get to "yes" not put them down. Although I know your frustration in dealing with folks like this, And it can be like shooting fish in a barrel. Be Patient, if you can inform them without them shutting you out, or closing their minds to your arguments, You will be successful. I want nothing more than Your success with this! Good luck My Friend!

(2,322 posts)The 'profanity" as you put it is a bad idea is one is hoping to get the kids in the "Thaw" video to change their minds. But though our narrator seems to be speaking to those kids, he probably knows that those kids and those cheering the video and joining up are unlikely to change their minds no matter how compellingly logical and right and polite his counter argument is.
The fight here isn't for THOSE kids in the video. It's for those who might be swayed by the "Thaw" video. And in that instance, it's best for him to point out, clearly and without a shadow of doubt how "stupid" those on the Thaw side are. He has to make it clear how embarrassing it is to be on their side--and thus make it clear to kids who might be swayed that being on their side would be a bad idea.
War for the hearts and minds of such teens is war.
Now if you or someone else wants to try and change the minds of the "Thaw" kids (and the parents and churches which immerse them in this propaganda 24/7)--that's a whole other video. One you're going to have to work very hard on in order to de-program all that programing. One they're not likely to be shown, as their parents and church don't want them de-programed. Deprograming, by the way, works best one-on-one; so talking to each one in person would be better. It's a very rare video that's going to do the job, and any such video is going to have to be short and emotional, a punch to the gut that creates an epiphany. Reason and logic, even politely and respectfully offered, won't do it, not against a belief that is religiously held.
I think it pretty clear that this video was NOT made to win over the hearts and minds of the "Thaw" kids. And thus, I don't think the changes you recommend will help this video do its real job--which is keeping teens and adults who are uncertain from taking the "Thaw" video seriously.

(787 posts)Many folks believe as I do That the use of profanity is a show of ignorance, And this young man is waaaaay beyond that! What's wrong with giving him a head start in presenting a more constructive message. Sometimes it takes years for a message to hit it's target. the better constructed the Argument the sooner you can cut to the chase.
[P]If you Call folks out as stupid right off the get-go it's a sure move to close them off from anything you have to offer. Calling people "Stupid" whether or not they believe this video is a Move That not only lacks tact, it lacks intelligence. If you had called me stupid at that age rather than try to present an well thought out argument. well it would have gotten you a knuckle sandwich, instead of someone who walks away thinking about what you had to say.
[P]You need to address the Behavior not the person. The Behavior is bad, Not the Person.
(IE; "You're a great friend, I like hanging out with you I just wish You wouldn't pick your nose in public. Is their anything I can do to help you stop it?" Does this Help? This type of presentation has a way of disarming the hostility they might feel to your point of view. If they refuse to hear a well thought out argument, Then that's stupid, But why start trouble. Unless you are so blinded by your own Intolerance (yes that's what I typed "Intolerance" That you want to cause trouble.
[P]People who have different beliefs as well as folks like myself, an atheist, can also be intolerant of others as well. I have several Friends who "Love Jesus" and I have to hold my tong at times when I'm in their home. They Know of my atheism, Hope some day I'll believe But they are My friends And I love them. So I put up with the occasional Profession of belief.
BTW, Getting to yes is a book I read years ago as a good means of negotiations. It roughly means you reach an understanding.
Moonwalk
(2,322 posts)...then telling the person, "Ugh! That nose picking is disgusting! Stop it, wont' you?" I mean, honestly, have you tried that "You're a good friend" line and did it really work? Because I've seen it done, and all it did in the case where I saw that was the person blew up and yelled at the person who praised them then criticized their behavior. Criticism of their behavior was taken as criticism of THEM and no amount of flattery changed that. Also, bad behavior person assumed they could cow the polite person into taking it back and apologizing.
And, yep, bad behavior person won. Got polite person to back down and got to keep their bad behavior.
I mean, let's put this in context: "I think you're a great friend but I hate how you criticize gays..." And the Christian responds. "My faith and god tell me to do that and I won't be untrue to either. Which means if you hate me doing that, then you hate me..."
So how does telling them how wonderful they are, but how bad that behavior is change the behavior if their parents, their church and their peers all approve of it and assert that god does as well? Let's be honest; what changes behavior, in most cases, is intervention. Meaning you have to have more than one person surround the one in question and say, "We feel this is wrong; it's bad for you, for us and others and you need to stop." THAT will make an impression.
Otherwise, the only way to make them stop is to make it apparent that their behavior IS disgusting and no one is going to hang with them so long as they do it.

(787 posts)Pretend it works every time, (BTW it worked on the nose picker.) It was in private and I did offer him a portable pack of klenex. He carries a hanky now. I find you should not attack the person. You should criticize the behavior. It works more often than not. and if it doesn't, You walk away with a clear conscious, and get to sleep well that night. If the other person ever gets it he'll realize he was an ass. The weirdest one is when I was apologized to almost 3 years later. It was waaaaaay too late but I accepted and wished her well.
