New York Times Readers Annoyed at Number of Jewish Writers

I enjoyed reading this New York Times Motherlode blog post by a Jewish writer describing her experience letting go of a superstition against baby showers, until I got to the comments. Midway through them, I found myself wondering when someone would make an explicit pejorative reference to the “Jew York Times.” It may as well have been there, given the umbrage a handful of readers took at what they characterized as an over-representation of Jewish voices and concerns in the popular parenting blog.

A commenter named Sharon thusly kicked off the fracas: “The topics presented in this blog seem to always have some sort of direct or indirect Jewish tie-in… this one, Zachary’s shiva, the acne lady mentioning that her secular school friends left her alone but the Hewbrew [sic] school kids were merciless, the over-priviledged [sic] pre-school couple was Jewish.”

I’ll be generous and give Sharon the benefit of the doubt that she did not mean to offend. I have, in the past, been accused of naivete.

But my optimism quickly waned when I examined the sentiments of other commenters, who glommed on acrimoniously to Sharon’s observation. “This blog is overly Jewish and it’s obvious,” wrote DH. “Blacks comprise over 12% of the population, compared with the measly 3% of Jews, and yet you don’t see guest posts by or about Black parents on here very often at all. Hispanics, even Asians comprise a larger percentage of the population than Jews do, yet they don’t get much of a voice either.”

...it seems.

On edit: Some progressives or self-identified leftists, anyway. The point is, it comes from both/all sides of the political spectrum...

I'd guess the outrage is primarily a result of the "christian" majority voicing their disgust with anyone not just like them. Intolerance from this crowd is louder than it's been in many years lately. They don't keep it at the sunday after-church dinner table any more.

With that said, the only arguments I've seen are by "leftists" or libruls who reject any and all religions and their insistence on telling people how to live, with the promise of punishment if they don't follow the letter of the "law."

If you follow a religion, follow it completely or cherry-pick, who cares. But just because you follow a religion, don't try to force the rest of us to live under it.

(Aside: I've never seen Jewish people trying to make others convert. It may happen, but I doubt it. With the obvious exception of "Jews for Jesus.&quot

"Jews for Jesus", well, aren't really considered Jews in the religious sense because they believe Jesus is the messiah and yes they do proselytize?, mainly to Jews, though.

"With that said, the only arguments I've seen are by "leftists" or libruls who reject any and all religions and their insistence on telling people how to live, with the promise of punishment if they don't follow the letter of the "law." "

Oh, there are those who take it way past that issue. You'd be surprised by those who peddle age-old anti-Semitism.

Learned a lot from employers, classmates at Columbia....

But my favorite dead certain way to tell is the prissy anti-semite who tries to divide us into good Jews and bad Jews, the ones it's moral to hate: the Zionists. I see that word and I know exactly what I'm dealing with.

stop suddenly because on of the parties realizes they're not quite on the same page.

Or at least I'd assume you know better.

was overwhelmingly anti-Zionist.

The problem here is the paranoia and insensitivity cited in the NYT comments is mirrored by your own.

I know the code words. Apparently, so do you.

"The problem here is the paranoia and insensitivity cited in the NYT comments is mirrored by your own. "

That doesn't even remotely make sense. Seems like projection of some sort, just not sure which. You are trying to make a point, so make it.

Zionism is not the same thing as Judaism. Nor are all Zionists also Jews. There are many Christian Zionists.

Opposing Zionism is not Anti-Semitic.

So you're wrong if you're saying otherwise.
