Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A new study estimates nearly 65,000 rape-related pregnancies have occurred, since the reversal of Roe vs. Wade, in states with total abortion bans.
The study published Wednesday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine estimates there have been 519,981 reported rapes that led to 64,565 pregnancies in the 14 states, which have enacted abortion bans since the Dobbs decision in 2022.
Researchers from Planned Parenthood and Resound Research for Reproductive Health said most of the 14 states do not have exceptions that allow abortion for cases of rape and, if they do, require the rape to be reported to authorities.
The states included in the study were Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.

(2,910 posts)I think I mis-placed that.
The pregnancy-from-rape issue is horrifying.
Of course, Abbott assured the people of Texas that he would stop rapes to make rape-pregnancy a non-issue in Texas. Now all he has to do is sue the people reporting otherwise and get a bounty. Ain't patriarchy wonderful.

(51,059 posts)Patriarchy. Oh, Lord. I have been so lucky that it has been on the ebb for all of my conscious life. But now it's coming back with a vengeance.
And I can't understand it. Because where it comes back, it makes EVERYONE'S life so much worse. Including the ones who love it.
It just shows how completely many are motivated by fear, thus hatred, of women.

(2,910 posts)since Sumer and Babylon. The Abrahamic religions of the desert tribes removed the feminine divine principle and made godhood exclusively masculine. It's so deeply ingrained in thousands of years of culture that the surprising fact is how strong the feminine principle still is. So I'm not shocked at patriarchy's resurgence.
Patriarchy benefits a few at the top of the hierarchy, but it's immensely destructive to all the men and women below them. I grew up with John Wayne as a role model, which was destructive to a nerdy kid's peace of mind. A lot of men died living up to John Wayne, who ironically never served in the military.
