Today's Tiedrich rant: what the fuck does The New York Times think it's doing?
Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/what-the-fuck-does-the-new-york-times
the other day, the Times decided to check out this whole Trump sure is sounding a fuck of lot like Hitler these days thing, and spoiler alert they did it in the most tepid way possible. because of course they did. theyre The New York Times.
Screenshot:
look how the Times frames it: Donald Trump has always had a thing about good genes. thats so adorable hes just another madcap eccentric with wacky ideas, right? much in the same way that Jeffrey Dahmer was into alternative food sources, and Genghis Khan took an avid interest in tourism.
Today's rant is short & sweet ... AND right on the money!
Thanks Jeff Tiedrich ... and Happy Holidays to everyone at DU!

Early populations didn't migrate much. Over many generations it was partly an inbred lot.

Truth and balance does not mean normalizing extremism. When truth is tilted against lunatics and authoritarians, you put them on a thin beam way out on the right extremes and give them only a little time and space in the media. The long beam balances the rationalistic center and left which being larger are positioned closer to the center for more coverage and balance. Note that left wing lunatics like that DEI woman who calls herself a rape counselor and says "believe the women", but also denies Hamas Oct7 rapes -- lunatics like her should get shoved out way out and given the minimal time/space to be dealt with.
When they are dangerous enough to merit closer and bigger attention (tRump), then soft-peddling their extremism is not smart.

(15,257 posts)They have been very slanted in their coverage of trump. A few articles/opinions every now and then that are good and critical, but the overwhelming amount is underwhelming it their analyses. Both-siderism is rampant at the old grey lady.

(276 posts)The NYT is great. It has smart folks and nice articles and recipes and classy art coverage BUT I would advise against trusting them to report with integrity and balance on some areas. To wit:
How the NYT Missed the Story of the Holocaust While It Was Happening

Really? Seriously? Is their goal to avoid being executed as enemies of the state in a Trump dictatorship?

(22,801 posts)is a far more powerful way to put his fascist views on record than some hysterical expression of outrage such as those expressed every day in the right wing media. No educated person could fail to understand the significance of an obsession with good genes at a time when both the NYT and the Washington Post have thoroughly exposed the historical Eugenics movement in the United States that resulted in policies such as sterilization of minorities and the intellectually challenged, and influenced Nazi philosophy.
The actual article includes the following:
...As with the speech in 2020, Mr. Trumps remarks have been criticized by historians, Jewish groups and liberals, who said his language recalled the ideology of eugenics promulgated by Nazis in Germany and white supremacists in America...He once asked his White House chief of staff why he lacked generals like those who reported to Hitler, calling those military leaders totally loyal to the Nazi dictator, according to a book on the Trump presidency by Peter Baker, a New York Times reporter, and Susan Glasser...On another occasion, he told the same aide that well, Hitler did a lot of good things, according to Michael C. Bender, a journalist who is now a New York Times reporter, in a 2021 book about Mr. Trump.
There is nothing tepid in that characterization unless you feel that calm objective discourse is not persuasive.

(111,261 posts)People are not race horses and treating "bloodlines" as something special leads to disaster. Inbreeding is a particularly bad idea for human beings.
And race hyorses are now suffering the effects of inbreeding along "champion bloodlines." That thinking is just a bad idea across the board.
Men who were born rich always want to think they're special. Give them a few generations, the hidden flaws will surface and their superior bloodline will fizzle out completely if they try to pursue the idea.

(13,109 posts)Its what Musk does and what Suckaberg does with their platforms.
The NYT and the majority of media are conglomerates ultimately owned by Republicans.
If we cant unravel the laws that allowed media consolidation at least we should at least be able to get transparency of ownership which is sorely lacking.
