Biden just turned 81. The smartest arguments for why he is -- and isn't -- too old to be president

-snip-

Before Biden, the oldest people to occupy the Oval Office were Ronald Reagan (nearly 78 on his last day as president), then Donald Trump (74 and a half), then Dwight D. Eisenhower (just over 70). No other president ever served past the age of 69. Biden would be 86 on Jan. 20, 2029. To a large degree, anxieties about his age reflect an understandable fear of the unknown.

Plenty of public figures have remained vigorous and effective well into their 80s. But does Biden belong in that elite crowd? And since elections are a choice, how does he compare, age-wise, to his likeliest Republican opponent, the 77-year-old Trump?

To counter concerns, Biden supporters often note that Trump, who also stumbles verbally, is only marginally younger — and that the Democrat’s busy schedule and list of achievements contradict the right-wing caricature of a doddering senior citizen.

He’s too old to kiss the asses of foreign dictators, having seen how they destroy physical and emotional lives.

He’s too old to abandon millions of people to a disease that was “politically inconvenient”, by lying about it, denying masking, blocking supply chains and making precautions a source of confrontation.

He’s too old to try to destroy the political system if he disagreed with the results, because that would harm basically everyone but himself.

He’s too old to rely on political dirty tricks like racism, antisemitism and militant religion to scrape up votes, because his life experience showed him the power of equality, respect for all, and fairness.

He’s too old to mean-mouth the military, judges, prosecutors and witnesses, because he knows how they safeguard our constitution and way of life.

He’s too old to cover up crimes and mistakes. Instead, he faced up to his goofs and corrected them.

He’s too old to advocate violence between citizens, because he knows that serves only foreign powers seeking to weaken the country.

He’s too old to squirrel away secret documents because they’re “cool”, they prove some point, or show dirt on someone, or maybe even sell them. From experience, he knows the importance of secrets, and respects the laws that govern them.

He’s too old to accept support of foreign powers in an election, and then try to cover it up, because that’s illegal, and corrodes the political system.

He’s too old to appoint family members to positions they’re blatantly unqualified to hold.

He’s too old to use office specifically to build up his bankroll.

He’s too old to “bothsider” issues when one side of the issue is completely un-American.

He’s too old to try to conceal his financial records.

He’s too old to lie about crowd sizes, and the size of other things.

He’s too old to entertain wacko ideas about buying countries (That’s Bin Salman’s job)

Speaking of which, he’s too old to be bought by billionaires waving wads of cash, knowing that selling oneself is illegal, immoral and fattening.

He’s too old to believe in and promote conspiracy theories, having seen that they are 150% bullshit.

He’s too old to beg an attorney general to create votes out of thin air.

He’s too old to pardon scumbags just because they were “close”, knowing that this, and everything above are just bad reflections on oneself.

But mainly, he has already passed the age when older men, instead of becoming wiser, more compassionate, and proud of the good they have done, just lose their marbles and lash out at everyone and everything when they realize that the deal they made with the devil is nearly time to be cashed in.
