Republican Rick Santorum:'..Democracies Are Not The Way To Run A Country'
- Daily Kos, Nov. 8, 2023.
Commenting on yesterdays election results, former Pennsylvania Senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum claimed on Tuesday that Ohios results proved pure democracies are not the way to run a country.
As has become increasingly clear in recent years, the GOP no longer believes in the essential core of democracy that decisions should be made by majority vote. Formerly pretending to be the conservative small government party supportive of individual freedom, in recent years the GOP has abandoned all pretense.
We have watched with horror how Trump and his GOP enablers pushed us closer and closer to authoritarianism and outright fascism. But Trump is just the visible tip of the GOP iceberg. Santorum makes it totally clear: Today the GOPs position is I know whats better for you than you do
So what you think doesnt really matter.
Gerrymandering, GOP primary processes designed to choose the candidate a priori selected by the GOP National Committee, the shambles in Congress where compromise is viewed as a four letter word by the tiny radical right-wing minority in charge in the House,
All proves only one thing They do not trust the unbiased vote, the essential democratic decision-making process...

(391 posts)government by the people, for the people. Can't get much more clear than that. If Republicans don't like it they can move to Russia.

(36,464 posts)You guys were all for democracy when the system favored you but now that the field is being leveled you don't like it so much when you have to compete with the lesser folk & discover that a lot of them are smarter & sharper than you.
Don't get me started about the ecological brink we're standing on due to the policies of rich (mostly) white men.

I can understand why hes confused.
He doesnt know the difference between democracies and elected officials. Between civil servants and political hacks. Between reality and propaganda words.

(2,256 posts)..Republicans won't learn from the losses. And it wasn't just the abortion issue that won in Ohio. All the other local Dem wins signal the same thing we saw in previous elections. Sane voters are voting in favor of democracy, more and more.
The GOP will keep pushing unpopular positions and continue losing elections.

There's no way we will ever get them to understand that we are both, a democratic republic, and they should stop trying to squeeze some kind of political relevance out of the name of their party.
