Fox Business host John Stossel says he recently dressed up as a homeless person and begged for money to prove that you shouldnt give money to these street people.
Yes, we are turning into a nation of freeloaders, Stossel told the co-hosts of Fox & Friends on Thursday. Because you feel like a sucker if youre not when government keeps offering you stuff.
***
In an effort to prove that freeloading was a lucrative pastime, the libertarian host said he recently posed as a homeless person as stunt for his Fox Business show. In the video clip, Stossel can be seen wearing a fake beard and dirty clothes. He asks people passing on the street to put money in his Styrofoam cup while he holds a sign that reads, Homeless & Cold: Anything will help, please. God bless.

With one sign that said, I really need help and one sign that said, Ill be honest with you, I just want a beer, I collected the same rate, he added. People just automatically give.

(52,438 posts)it's one thing to object to government helping people because there is an element that we all pay for it, even if you object to the spending.
but it's another thing entirely to complain about private individuals making voluntary private gifts.
in fact, the USUAL argument they make against government help is that this should be left to private charity.
so then they go and complain about private charity as well.

He better go out again, the first try didn't work.

Humility? Well, I don't even know if that one is already on the vice list, given their preference for swaggering blowhards.
Patience and kindness are on life support as well.

(15,393 posts)That's what it's all about. I'm sure there are scammers out there, but I doubt anyone is going to be living the good life from begging. Did he look for scammers? No. He's saying people are chumps for giving a person who looks down on their luck a quarter or two.
What he's probably most pissed about is that his rich masters haven't figured out how to benefit from it like in this Monty Python skit.

(2,952 posts)when Stossel got the taste slapped out of his mouth by that wrestler, it caused him permanent damage for life.....he used to be a decent journalist, but that's a decade or two behind him now.....

(37,163 posts)Before then he'd done the consumer interest beat, plus entertainment fluff like the wrestling gig.
After that, he climbed on the "miracle market" bandwagon and left the crappy (for a reporter) jobs behind him.

I don't believe you "been a Democrat most" of your life, or if you were you've been a damn lazy one.
Do you know what a Libertarian is? A useful idiot who myopically sees some government abuse, declares it all tyranny, and proceeds to help dozens of smaller private tyrants dismantle the only thing keeping them from running loose all over the rest of us.

In his novel Transitions, Banks defines libertarianism as "A simple-minded right-wing ideology ideally suited to those unable or unwilling to see past their own sociopathic self-regard".
The libertarian mantra is "I've got mine, so screw you!"

(90 posts)I had to watch an ABC News special on greed done by the ass in my AP Government/Economics class, in which the video claimed that Michael Milken A.K.A: The "Junk Bond King" did more good for society because he "Created work", than regular philanthropists and people who give to charities.
I had to spend a whole hour listening to this right-wing nonsense while resisting the urge to flip off the television and shout about how skewed it was. (My family couldn't at the time and still can't pay many of our dues. All of my graduation money went towards the rent this month.)
He hasn't changed since that video was made, it seems.

(553 posts)Little doubt remains that he is fit to be on the air. Posing as a homeless person in order to spoil their already precarious reputation and situation is a slow as a psychopath will go to get some ratings points. His sanctimonious and preachy approach make me want to find a wrestler who has experienced homelessness then have him beat the stupid out of this vermin. I wish him cancer in a very sensitive place and maybe that he be mauled by pitbulls and set on fire by hooligans. Sorry, but I can't think of anything more fitting for that pampered jerk.

(62,325 posts)And there is something wrong with that? Count me in as one who 'automatically gives'.
'For it is in giving that we receive'.
I haven't noticed him or his right wing cohorts asking what the bailed out failures do with the billions of tax dollars we all had to donate to them. Did anyone ask if they were buying beer or coke or yachts eg?
These people are shameful. And I bet he calls himself a 'Christian' too.
If someone who is homeless can get a little pleasure from buying a beer, if I give that person a donation, then it is his, and if buying a beer makes his/her day a little brighter, then that is money well spent.
They cannot stand to see money going to the poor. As far as he is concerned ALL money belongs to THEM.

(48,217 posts)This was at a time when VCRs cost about $30 and videotapes rented for $1. He never thought about the fact that buying a VCR is cheaper than taking a family of four to the movies.
Another favorite right-wing cliché is that the poor aren't really poor because they have air conditioning, stoves, and refrigerators. I remind such people that 1) Most poor people live in apartments, 2) It is illegal to rent an apartment without a stove and refrigerator, 3) Most apartments in Minneapolis have built-in window or wall air conditioners because not to have air conditioning in the summer here is like not having heat in the winter, and they can drive around in the poorer neighborhoods of the city and see that I'm right.

(12,769 posts)What an ass. Claims he was making money at the rate of $24,000 a year although he just did it for a few hours but showed absolutely no proof.
I have no proof of it but I am going to call him a pathetic liar anyway.

I don't care if he is gay, we certainly don't want that kind of fascistic pig in our ranks. I suspect he's a closet queen dripping with self-hatred just to get the bucks.
I knew several men in the 80s who claimed to have had sex with Geraldo. EWWWWW.
