Auto plants roar into overdrive - over-time hrs and extra shifts being added
... to Mitt Romney and Sen Shelby, here's some great news for you two to gag on!
http://www.usatoday.com/NEWS/usaedition/2012-05-23-Auto-Plants-Overworked_ST_U.htm
Automakers are pushing factories and workers to the limit to try to meet burgeoning demand for new vehicles.
Some plants are adding third work shifts. Others are piling on worker overtime and six-day weeks. And Ford Motor and Chrysler Group are cutting out or reducing the annual two-week July shutdown at several plants this summer to add thousands of vehicles to their output.
"We have many plants working at maximum capacity now," Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans says. "We're building as many (cars) as we can."

The automakers' problem now is one they welcome: hot demand. Sales for 2012 are estimated at 14.3 million vehicles, according to IHS Automotive, up from 12.8 million last year.

... postscript: You cannot find this story if you go to usa today's web site (top level). The article was in today's paper (hard copy). I enterred the title into google and found it on the USA Today site but I never could have found it if I hadn't seen it in the paper and knew the proper terms to enter into Google. And it was on the FRONT PAGE OF TODAY'S PAPER.

(735 posts)2. 2013 is the year Detroit roars back!
Two new fuel efficient Cadillacs, a new Chevy Impala and Malibu, new Chevy Silverados, Tahoes and Suburbans, a new Ford Fusion and Ford Escape.
Chrysler has a new Dodge Dart compact and a revamped Ram truck that will lead the industry in gas mileage even beating the compact Toyota Tacoma.
Buy a UAW car, get a great car and piss off Republicans.

I have a Dodge now but my next car will probably be a Chevy. Can't wait!

Huge surprise. Inventories are really high.
