This is not a drill. The Reichstag is burning.

Opinion by Dana Milbank

America, this is not a drill. The Reichstag is burning.

For five years, my colleagues and I have taken pains to avoid Nazi comparisons. It is usually hyperbolic, and counterproductive, to label the right “fascists” in the way those on the right reflexively label the left “socialists.” But this is no longer a matter of name-calling.

With his repeated refusals this week to accept the peaceful transfer of power — the bedrock principle that has sustained American democracy for 228 years — President Trump has put the United States, in some ways, where Germany was in 1933, when Adolf Hitler used the suspicious burning of the German parliament to turn a democracy into a totalitarian state.

Overwrought, you say? Then ask Yale historian Timothy Snyder, a top authority on Nazism and Stalinism. “The Reichstag has been on a slow burn since June,” he told me. “The language Trump uses to talk about Black Lives Matter and the protests is very similar to the language Hitler used — that there’s some vague left-wing conspiracy based in the cities that is destroying the country.”

Trump, as he has done before, has made the villain a minority group. He has sought, once again, to fabricate emergencies to justify greater powers for himself. He has proposed postponing elections. He has refused to commit to honoring the results of the election. And now, he proposes to embrace violence if he doesn’t win.

He is already inciting sedition against the Constitution and legal authority 6 weeks in advance of his coming defeat.
He has announced his intent to try to steal the election even as he loses the vote of the people.
He is transparently announcing the SCOTUS pick is intended to give him a ruling in the court, REGARDLESS of basis or facts.

This is NOT a joke.
If he refuses to leave, if he attempts to thwart the peaceful transfer of power, he should be shot on sight by the US Marshalls.

If Breonna Taylor can die in her bed for doing NOTHING wrong, then Trump can be arrested in the Oval Office for attempting a coup d'etat on the oldest representative republic in the world. And if he runs? Shoot him down, period. I would not even required the agents to announce their presence or attempt to detain him.

He needs to be put to a choice - leave within the law (and take your chances in court for your crimes to date), or try to illegally seize power (and take your chances against the aim of US Marshalls and Secret Service agents).

There is no third option.

Kinda like that Marshal outcome. You know if he leaves, he and his KKKlan will burn the nation down. All the blood that has been spilled for the nation, can not now be in vane. Cut the cancer out of the host, entirely. Media has that blood on their hands. During the fall, media will get the viewers they so desire. If you think the beginning of Iraq war was ratings gold. ......Corp media works for Corp profits, at any cost. If you do not believe trumpets will bring war in the streets, look how they are praising the 17 year old and his murder supporting mother as hero’s. And GOP will allow, so McConnell, Graham, Tillis and all trump’s thieves can permanently keep power.

Yes, trump is not new, he is the result of that line you so cleverly entered in your post, and he is the most sincere about his fascist nature, although its just to save himself for what, hopefully, is coming to him, jail for the rest of his life. Not sure why people are surprised that we are where we are.

The most frustrating thing for me when I listen to Democrats, and the news, is that all we hear is what these fascists have done, are doing, plan to do, but we never hear concrete information of what Democrats are going to do to stop it. I hear complains, I never hear solutions. Its like we have been hit in the head with a hammer, we have not been knocked out, we are just unable to react.

I cannot believe there are no actions Democrats can take to stop the nomination of a new judge. TYT gave yesterday a list of actions Democrats can take to stop it. I admit I have not finished watching it, but his introduction was very clear that there were measures Democrats can take and he explains in the video.

Because the stupidest thing the Dems can do is show their trump cards.

In 1933, the world didn't know precisely who and what Hitler was.

We know very well who Trump is.

In 1933, Germany had no culturally or historically invested understanding of Democracy.

We do.

We will, in time, deal with the criminal subversion of our Constitution, all of it.

We only need faith in ourselves, and the fact that in Joe Biden, we have the right man at the right time to do this. I am sure he will confer with his good and generous friend for whom he worked from 2008 to early 2017, and together, they will restore this country.

I would only add that those who are responsible should be held accountable. I believe that we failed to do so when Bush and Cheney led us into a war based solely on lies they concocted. I think that it is a distinct possibility that we would not be in the mess that we are presently in if they had done so. It would have sent a message that such deceptions will not be tolerated and those responsible would be held accountable. The come by ya sing along around the campfire just doesn't hack it.
