Mormons to the Rescue?
Timothy Egan
In order to understand the Republican Party today, you have to understand religion. Donald Trump may be the most unreligious president ever an undisciplined force of corrosive evil. And yet he tweets comparisons to himself as the Messiah and bullies his way around the world with the blind support of white evangelical Christians.
But the one religious faith that is the most heavily Republican is also somewhat disgusted with Trump. Barely half the members of the American-grown Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints approve of his presidency.
And therein lies the best chance, though its very much a long shot, to remove Trump from office. Wait! Mormons forged from a polygamous theocracy in the Rocky Mountain West, tainted by decades of institutional racism and still very much opposed to marriage equality to the rescue of the Republic? Maybe.

(43,049 posts)How did he do as Governor of Massachusetts?
Which leads to another simple question-- if we were to lose the White House, would Romney be better or worse than losing to Trump again?
And my speculation-- Romney would be far more difficult to beat for some of our candidates.

(7,888 posts)I agree with. I don't practice any religion, so...it matters not to me what others choose for themselves. not that you asked, just a clarification
A little birdie (media speculation) is that what's left of the RNC "king" makers will be supporting, for queen, Niki Haley. Next for a chance at grabbing the golden ring?

(66,097 posts)But every Mormon I've ever met has been friendly and polite. For all the ugly misogyny they share with Trump, they must at least dislike his boorish, thuggish behavior.
I am not religious, and think Mormonism is one of the sillier and harder to defend religions, but they are in my opinion one of the most sincere and least hypocritical.
I had a Mormon boss for one summer job during college. He would not drink anything with caffeine, since that was a drug (Sprite was his only soft drink) and his go-to cuss word was "Oh pickleworm."
Our bookkeeper told me that he had called a vendor and asked him to resend an invoice because he had undercharged by about $5.

(9,631 posts)Whether jack mormon or not, as a group, they are generally kind, considerate and industrious. In my experience they take care of each other - not in a cloistered, groupthink sort of way but in a Golden Rule, "we help because because it is good for the community" way.
Yes, they have unusual religious ideas and usually listen to the church but also exhibit an open-minded independence too.
IMO, they are not the nasty tempered, spit-faced, extremist, "I'll-choot-if-you-disagree", close minded types I associate with the Protestant evangelical right elsewhere in the US.

(1,784 posts)They show up at government events in Utah packing heavy assault rifles, they cannot be counted on to do other than their religion tells them vis a vis homosexuals, and for all intents and purposes, the bundies were basically an offshoot of Mormonism, and you should note how quick they were to resort to guns in that case (thats in the Book of Mormon, believe it or not).
By and large, you are correct, most are polite and respectful, so long as they dont feel youre being purposely dismissive or disrespectful of their religion. The problem is that they dont police their own, and that attracts more of the fringe element, (see Hilldale) and that applies to the firearm aspect of it, the social aspect of it, and the financial conservatism aspect of it.
They are, at heart, fundamentalists. They are amongst those who will vote for trump again before they will vote for any democrat, you can take that to the bank.
Anyone counting on blue LDS wave is going to be waiting a very, very long time.

(33,368 posts)...one has to imagine that if nothing else, they take their beliefs seriously.
We may contrast this with ersatz "Christians" who worship the orange anti-christ and his running violation of every single one of the ten commandments, with the possible exception of "Honor your mother and father."
His father was a racist, and he's at least honoring that.
The list:
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall make no idols.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
Keep the Sabbath day holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.
It appears that our modern day "Christians" have no idea what those words mean.
