Video: California High-School Students Sang Nazi Song and Gave Hitler Salute. Athletes performed an homage to the Third Reich before an awards ceremony. Their school wont say how they were disciplined. The Daily Beast, Aug18, 2019.
A group of high-school students in Southern California gave a Nazi salute and sang a Nazi song during an awards ceremony last year, according to video reivewed by The Daily Beast.
The video shows about 10 members of the boys water polo team at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, California, throwing the salute once used to greet Adolf Hitler while singing a Nazi marching song played for German troops during World War II. Its the second such incident in the region in the year.
The video was uploaded to Instagram by one of the athletes, who also posted lyrics to the song in his Instagram bio. After the video expired, the athlete removed the reference. He did not respond to requests for comment.
A spokesperson for the Garden Grove Unified School district where Pacifica High School resides said the school administrators first became aware of the incident and video four months later in March, but did not say if they disciplined anyone...More-

(7,947 posts)So this is more than just some naughty boys trying to shock. It's really hard to imagine that a team would agree to do this and learn the song... I have sons, and I know how in teen years they often look for extreme ways to shock. But this took some coordination and effort.
A couple of the boys seem not to participate, and one walks out -- maybe at least they were uncomfortable with this.
I wonder if-- 80 years after the war-- Hitler is just kind of a signifier of "something parents and grandparents and teachers don't like and we can use to get back at them" rather than who/what he was. Someone on the team, however, had to take the lead and choose this obscure song and get the others to agree to it. The boys are in suits, so this is apparently some official team ceremony.
That desire to be transgressive, to offend for the sake of offending, to ignore everything but your own nasty feelings, are so Trumpian too-- like he's grinning at them and saying, "Do what you want to as long as it's mean and loud and will stick it to the libs."
The power of negative peer pressure is one of the factors in the rise of the violent RW youth.
I remember in my kids' middle school, one thing that was focused on was building the ability to resist peer pressure and speak out against bullying and negative group activity. They even role-played standing up and saying, "This is wrong," and walking away. (Of course, one of my kids decided to exercise this new skill in math class during a math drill....)

Somebody in their community needs to forward this footage to the admissions departments of every prestigious university on the West Coast. Names and addresses included. For starters. Seig heil that, little boys.
