UN Passes Anti-War Rape Resolution Despite US Opposition

UN Passes Anti-War Rape Resolution Despite US Opposition

On Tuesday, the United Nations amended resolution aimed at ending sexual violence in war passed 13-0, with Russia and China abstaining. This was after the United States threatened to use their veto power to demand that all references to sexual and reproductive health be cut out. The Trump administration called for this change because they claim the resolution “implies support for abortion.”

The Security Council expressed their concern over slow progress in addressing sexual violence through their new resolution, which denounces the use of rape as a weapon of war. The original form has garnered the support of activists around the world. Because of the U.S.’s restrictive demands, activists have displayed outrage.

French U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre told the 15 members of the council: “It is intolerable and incomprehensible that the Security Council is incapable of acknowledging that women and girls who suffered from sexual violence in conflict – and who obviously didn’t choose to become pregnant – should have the right to terminate their pregnancy.”

Jessica Neuwirth of the Sisterhood Is Global Institute addressed the resolution in a statement: “It is unthinkable and bizarre to see the US lining up with Russia and China to block efforts to strengthen the UN’s ability to effectively address rape in conflict and to provide sexual violence survivors with sexual and reproductive health services.”

To any sane person, supporting this anti-rape UN resolution is a no-brainer. But once again, religious fundamentalism meets political self-interest resulting in yet another stupid decision. When will we ever break free from the people who have hijacked and taken over our religious and governmental affairs? These are two major pillars of civilization and we have the worst of the worst people in charge of them. The advancement of humanity requires that we strongly oppose war and especially the atrocities that go hand-in-hand with it. But once again, the US falls on the side of the criminals.

Money is not more important than the integrity of Life, yet over and over the "United" States as an entity puts little value on individual human life. This is contrary to statements in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights yet here we are. The United States has objections to justice for victims of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Don't even want to ask what next...with tRump in office, no telling how despicably low it will go.

They only care that women carry all pregnancies to term, regardless of circumstances. Anything else around it, they couldn't care less - sex ed, care of the mothers, care of the children, fatal birth defects, maternity leave, day care, individual sovereignty ...none of these concerns play a part in their dogmatic view of abortion. They've proven to me that they don't really think much about their beliefs.

I think they are pro-rape and they have rape fantasies they would like to act out.

Joan of Arc was burned at the stake, not due to an accusation of being a witch, but because she wore men's clothing. She wore men's clothing to make it more difficult for an attacker to rape her. (Women's skirts, worn at the time without underwear, made rape easier...) You believe that? It was actually considered a crime for a woman to decrease the risk of rape, which was considered a soldier's prerogative or 'spoils of war' at the time.

Men, once again, deciding what is appropriate in terms of a woman's body...
