The Uninhabitable Earth: Unflinching New Book Lays Out Dire Consequences of Climate Chaos

I am older, in my sixties, and I worry all the time.

February 21, 2019

“It is worse, much worse, than you think.” That’s the opening line of a damning new book by journalist David Wallace-Wells that offers an unflinching look at the growing climate catastrophe. “The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming” sounds the alarm about the climate crisis and the need for swift and radical action to save the planet from unimaginable destruction. We speak to Wallace-Wells about the rapid heating of the planet, which he says could reach more than 4 degrees Celsius by 2100.

is it allows climate change deniers to portray climate change as, well, hyperbole.

The Earth is not going to be uninhabitable.

He says as much:

"The short answer is, for hyperbole. I think that we need people to be alarmed."

But the people prone to be alarmed are already alarmed, they ain't the folks you need to reach.

like Rush Limbaugh is more to the issue and there is no penetrating that mentality that I can think of.

Hyperbole or not, they are not likely to change. Then there are those who benefit from it financially, other than exposing them, what will change their minds? They seem to believe they can move to another planet, but money will not save the future for their children.

And why if it's all pointless in trying to convince anyone who isn't already convinced?

OR it isn't pointless so maybe use logic and reason and not hyperbole??

And while I think true uninhabitability is vanishingly unlikely, it is conceivable. And the fact that we’ve brought it into view at all is a huge indictment of everything we’ve done over the last few decades.

whole lot of stuff is "conceivable" but you don't plan for all of it.

Polar caps melting, methane etc. I’m in my late 50s and expect all of this in the next 10 years or so. I don’t see hyperbole in what I’ve been reading and learning about. I’m with you BeckyDem, it doesn’t look good and I’ve been an optimist-Pollyanna most of my life.

I've parted ways with ex-friends over these issues - those who didn't want to know, didn't want to be bothered. Sorry, don't want to know about these issues? Then don't tell me about your trivial headaches.
