(2,382 posts)Ol' Mikey-Mike Pence is gettin' it from all sides, now! I bet he wishes he never even HEARD of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, let alone signed the goddamned thing!

(430 posts)I wanted to make an argument on FB in effect that Indiana Republicans are thumping their bibles while their house burns down.
However, most of what I pulled up on Google showed them doing pretty well.
- Top half of the country in public school funding and performance
- 8th strongest economic growth in the country
- #1 manufacturing growth in the country

(2,382 posts)IN does show nominal growth in jobs according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. I also output the stats for Wisconsin, because I have plans to skewer Walker again. Those stats ARE pretty gruesome, and they were on my drawing board right next to Indiana's. So, my mistake. But Hoosiers are going to feel it when companies refuse to do business there, and the whole point of the 'toon was about a really shitty law, and what a self-serving prick Pence is.
Pence straps on his knee pads at the mere mention of the Koch brothers, and ALEC is hard at work poisoning the IN legislature, so the comment will likely be all too true soon enough. Pence has only been in office for a couple of years. Give him time; he'll screw working Indianans as quickly as he can.

(430 posts)I made the argument anyway on Indiana, but used the argument of funding roads and bridges. Everyone agrees infrastructure needs to be paid more attention to, and its embarrassing to reasonable conservatives to see their elected officials blowing so much time on creative ways to violate the 14th and 1st amendments when their infrastructure is crumbling.

(2,382 posts)Where I live in central Vermont, Tropical Storm Irene wiped out huge portions of the the state highway adjacent to our village. Couldn't get out of here for 2 weeks even on horseback, it was so bad. But the road was restored before winter, and everyone did an amazing job.
Then last summer they tore up the entire road again and rebuilt it. Less than 3 years old. A TOTALLY unnecessary expenditure, when another nearby highway was an axle-buster in desperate need of attention, and still is.
Bottom line, I don't trust ANY politicians, even the ones I like. And because this is a small state, I know all our local state reps and senators, as well as Pat Leahy, Bernie Sanders, and Peter Welch, who know who I am from the steady stream of correspondence they receive from me. I've only spoken with Shumlin once, but it was about our highway, and be back-pedaled like I was an Ebola carrier!
Gotta keep 'em on their toes!

(6,800 posts)It only makes sense that we devote our resources to various infrastructure improvements -- transportation, education, medical care, housing, agriculture, scientific research and development.
It could be financed with taxation of the 1% and bonds, would put millions of people to work, provide environmentally sensible transport, educate the populace, attend to everyone's medical and dental needs, and help to be sure everyone has a decent roof over their heads, food on their table, clean water, and eye-glasses and shoes. It would be a quantum leap of improvement for the people of our nation.
Look what we did with the CCC, the Manhattan Project, the Interstate Highway system, the moon shot, the Internet. We darn well could do it if we make up our minds to do so.
Bernie is the only one I hear speaking even remotely in these terms. Yet, it only makes sense to do it, starting right now! --Tace
