Ebola doctor lands in Nebraska, 'critically ill' and sicker than other US patients

Source: The Guardian

A surgeon who contracted Ebola while working in Sierra Leone is in critical condition, and possibly sicker than any patient to arrive in the US from the disease-ravaged region of west Africa, a spokesman from the Nebraska hospital where he will be treated said on Saturday.

Dr Martin Salia, a permanent US resident, arrived in Omaha on Saturday afternoon, having left Freetown on Friday, by air ambulance. He was due to be immediately transported to Nebraska medical center.

“He is critically ill, a good deal sicker than our previous patients, and perhaps sicker than any patient that has been transported from west Africa,” Taylor Wilson, a spokesman for the hospital, told the Guardian.

Wilson said he was not sure if the patient’s condition had changed in flight, but Salia had been determined to be stable for transport before he left Sierra Leone.

There are other facilities equipped to treat Ebola patients, but it appears that Omaha is the best. They could have taken him anywhere, but they chose Omaha, so that speaks for the expertise of this facility, and here's wishing he makes a complete recovery.

Usually, we hear about it being used for the militarization of the police and other undesirable goals.

I thought the earlier people are treated the better. Still, he couldn't be in a better facility than Nebraska Medical Center where Ashoka Mukpo was successfully treated.

But Emory was able to get her through it.

Hopefully Nebraska will succeed here as well.

People become sick when caring for loved ones, or helping strangers in need.

Doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, and other healthcare workers get infected as they try to heal and provide comfort to patients.

Burial teams risk contamination as they try to safely bury deceased victims.

All are selfless people dedicated to caring for others, they represent the best of humanity.

Ebola is just a virus that evolved to take advantage of infecting via contact with body fluids. But if I didn't know better, I'd call it sheer evil.

It seems that once Ebola passes a critical point, it is not terribly treatable.

I hope Dr. Salia beats the odds. He is a hero.
