In Omaha, W. Bush's daughters share their recipe for young women's success

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Betsie Freeman

Young women can achieve great things if they’re open to possibilities, listen to mentors and cultivate a passion to change the world — no matter what they aspire to be, twins Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Bush said Wednesday in Omaha.

The sisters, daughters of President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, were the featured speakers for the annual Girls Inc. Lunch for the Girls at the CenturyLink Center. They answered questions from Girls Inc. staffer Angel Martin in a 40-minute interview-style talk.

Jenna is a contributing correspondent on NBC’s "Today," and Barbara is the CEO and co-founder of Global Health Corps, an organization that mobilizes young people to address health-care inequities.

They spoke about their careers, the women they look up to, what it’s like to be the daughters of a sitting president and what advice they gave President Obama’s daughters, among other topics.

FULL story at link.

... look around at your own extended family, at whose looks have skipped a generation or so.

In my family there's a 38 year old snapshot of my dad, his sister, my sister, and me holding my toddler girl. It's a cookie cutter photo. We get our looks from my father's father, although in a blue-eyed family, I somehow got his dark eyes.

My son, on the other hand, looks very different. Because at one point I had met much of my ex-husband's family, before death, divorce, and geographical scattering took place, I knew who my son resembled but never thought to mention it. When the kids were in their early teens I realized my ex was never going to take the trouble to introduce his kids to the now-scattered relations, so I took it on myself to arrange a trip to an elderly aunt and uncle I liked and with whom I still shared Christmas cards.

Lo and behold: my son saw his reflection for the first time in the face (and height) of his father's mother's brother, i.e. his great uncle.

Except to say that I never said the President might not become super rich in the future. Just that he wasn't born that way. He earned his fortune. You don't have to believe that if you don't want to. But he does things the right way. He earned his way to the office. He didn't flounce out on to the campaign trail exuding a sense of entitlement to it secondary to wealth, privilege, a former President in the family, etc.

BTW, the plural of 'Obamas' is 'Obamas', not 'Obama's'. I don't know what website you came from, but we have higher standards here at DU.

The fact that anyone, democrat, republican or someone from Mars can get rich off of being in office shows the corruption of the system. I would rather have someone enter office rich rather than get rich off of the office. At least that way they may not be as driven by the almighty dollar.

As for wether if he earned it or not, that is not for me to say but he got a whole lot richer after he became Senator Obama and Michele's income increased as well. You can keep your head in the sand and believe only one party is dirty that's okay but I'm here to tell you they are all either rich or will be rich in federal office and that is not the way it was supposed to be.

Plus, he was paid a salary as Illinois Senator. And he's paid a salary now as President. I didn't know if you knew that or not. As for getting rich, really rich; mostly, for public figures, that comes from paid speeches and personal appearances. President Obama is legally enjoined from engaging in these as long as he is in public office. It's a pretty safe bet he's not doing it on the sly. The republicans have been trying for years to impeach him on spurious charges. I doubt he'd give them an actual legal excuse to do the deed.

Explain to me about Michele's pay increase at the hospital she worked at after President Obama became Senator Obama. I'm not defending any republican as well, most are trash as well but to think a state senator that makes $72,591 today, not 10 years ago can purchase a $1,320,000 house is questionable, but hey more power to him.

I know you think he is perfect and I voted for him but he is not perfect, he is an elected politician and that barely puts him above a personal injury attorney.

He isn't smart or reliable enough to be a Walmart greeter, but because HIS daddy was rich, he got to be president of the United States. If your daddy is rich, you can be whatever you want too.
