U.S. Marines, Army soldiers deployed to U.S. Embassy in Iraq

The Pentagon said about 100 Marines and Army soldiers have been deployed to Baghdad to help with security at the U.S. Embassy and stand ready in case the speedy evacuation of American citizens is needed.
Rear Adm. John Kirby called it a small number of U.S. troops and Marines, the Army Times reported. Another U.S. military official not identified in the Army Times report put the number around 100.
The news of the deployment comes as State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Sunday that most of the 5,000 or so staffers at the U.S. Embassy located in Baghdads Green Zone, the former center of the governmental Coalition Provisional Authority were going to stay.
Overall, a substantial majority of the U.S. Embassy presence in Iraq will remain in place, and the embassy will be fully equipped to carry out its national security mission, Ms. Psaki said, the Army Times reported. Others at the embassy have relocated to consulates in Basra, Irbil and in

(59,508 posts)I can remember many times that preparations have been made to rescue Americans when countries become unstable or there is some natural disaster. The probability that they might need the help is sufficiently high to evacuate many non essential people and to make these precautions.
Note that the number of marines can not possibly be for anything but defensive operations.

You are seriously asking me that question? I mean I'm not the one speculating here.

(410 posts)The day of 9-11, before we supposedly went into Afghanistan, the Carl Vincon Battle Group went BACK to Japan (they'd just left) and picked up marines and army, headed to Afghanistan, and dropped them off ...
Now, how many DAYS was it before WE knew they were there? ... do you remember? ... about 30 days later if I'm remembering correctly ...
The battle groups react immediately ... but keep stroking that "broad brush" statement it's kinda funny ...

After 9-11 when the Carl Vincon Battle Group arrived they dropped off marines and army troops in Afghanistan while we were supposedly building UN support ...
same song, next verse ...
Now try to follow me here ... This means that they had the Marines and the Army ONBOARD the boats before they reached the ME ...

I want to believe he is fulfilling that pledge.
The alternative is to sit back and watch what is bound to be ugly, and we at minimum helped create (oh, and in fight each other about who is to blame.)
