Police found the alleged shooter's diary in his family's Oregon home. The 15-year-old's detailed plans did not name specific people as targets, police said. A leader at the teen's Mormon church said Padgett was 'highly regarded for his spirituality.'

The 15-year-old freshman who opened fire on his Oregon high school Tuesday wanted to kill "sinners," the teen wrote in his diary.
Jared Padgett, an active member of an Gresham, Ore., Mormon church, shot and killed a student and injured a teacher during the attack on Reynolds High School before turning the gun on himself, police said.
While searching through the teen's home, officers found his journal, Portland's KGW reported.
In the diary, Padgett detailed plans to kill the "sinners" at his school, police said.

(14,178 posts)Much like calling a religious person a person "of faith". As a way of elevating those who subscribe to following a man-made fantasy dogma. To call someone faithful makes them seem like automatically good intentioned, ....like Lassie. The same goes for "spiritual"

(61,709 posts)The Bible has too much violence in it. Christians seem to think only Islam promotes violence against nonbelievers, but there is enough in the Bible, too, even against children.

(45,319 posts)The sinner's blood must be shed to make salvation possible, thus shooting a sinner is a gift given them. Brigham Young taught this. It was the law in the Utah territory. They said it was compassionate to kill sinners and that blood must be spilled, thus a shot to the heart was the favored method.
Religions are all so creamy good!

(322 posts)who would never submit to secular mental health care. Biblepsychosis essentially sanctions the murder of anyone who doesn't adhere to the dogma. Then plug in easy access to guns - well, maybe that's part of our grim future, particularly with climate science denial in the mix with these wackos.

(17,994 posts)they were in on the God stuff too.
Religion has always been the single best way for any group, tribe or nation to dehumanize and make war on their neighbors. I really struggle with this, since I know folks who are religious (Quakers, Episcopalians, etc.) and wonderful people all around. But in the wrong hands, religion is deadly. Religion inherently divides people. Spirituality, on the other hand, is a totally different matter. I wish those in the media would learn to differentiate between the two.
