Polls: Americans Divided By Party Lines On Bergdahl Swap

While the exchange of five Taliban detainees for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is unpopular with a plurality of Americans, Republicans were more likely than Democrats to disapprove of the deal, according to two polls released this week.
A poll released Monday by the Pew Research Center and USA Today found that 43 percent of Americans overall said the Obama administration did the wrong thing in trading Taliban prisoners for the detained U.S. soldier while 23 percent said the deal was the right decision to make.
Republicans were overwhelmingly negative about the prisoner swap, with 71 percent responding that the exchange was the wrong thing to do, according to the poll. By contrast, 55 percent of Democrats said the swap was the right thing to do.
The poll also found a partisan divide among respondents who thought the U.S. was responsible for securing a captive soldier's release, no matter the circumstances. Seventy-five percent of Democrats versus just 39 percent of Republicans said the U.S. was obligated to do all it could to secure a captive's freedom.

when the people spitting on a soldier returning home are the ones who claim they are the most patriotic. Your last paragraph before the snip shows just how many Republicans have neither consciences nor souls.
And I'm sure they all go to church on Sunday, too.

(180 posts)Everything in the news these days is a DISTRACTION from what this country needs to do.
Even our Progressive radio stations jump on the band wagon and spends days and days talking about what the Republicans want to talk about.
It's the VA, the POW swap, Bengazi, Hilary's brain, Bundy, NRA, gay rights, marriage equality, abortion, etc, etc, etc.
WHEN do the Progressives take charge of the message?
We should be talking about JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, INCREASING SOCIAL SECURITY, INCREASING the MINIMUM WAGE, REPAIRING The INFRASTRUCTURE that is crumbling before our eyes, health care for ALL and getting out of the MIDDLE EAST!
If the right wants to talk about garbage, then let them, But we PROGRESSIVES need to stay on message on issues that are IMPORTANT to the American people. We need to HAMMER our messages everyday and let the Republicans DEFEND their positions not us.
PROSECUTING WALL STREET, breaking the mega banks up, breaking up all the monopolies that have occurred in so many industries.
LOOKING BACK and PROSECUTING the BUSH administration for WAR CRIMES!!
I'm sick and tired of listening to the progressives REACTING to the Republican message machine. They must laugh themselves silly, knowing that the Progressives bite EVERYTIME they throw a line out!

(3,586 posts)It's attributed to an unnamed Bush 43 senior adviser, thought to be Karl Rove:
Were an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while youre studying that reality judiciously, as you will well act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and thats how things will sort out. Were historys actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.
Some things haven't changed. But I agree with you, they must. Welcome to DU, markmyword!

every three years, we are average for reading and science, but below average in math.
And just read the defensive excuses some of our people are putting up!
A hearty WELCOME to DU!

(23,946 posts)The poll questions fail to mention Berghdahl was America's last POW, the questions are more propaganda.
Do you think it was write or wrong to exchange five Twliban prisoners for captive U.S. Soldier Bowe Bergdahl?
Now if you added that the "soldier" was 5 year prisoner of war tortured and caged by the Talliban, what would be the response?
Freaky pollsters are freaky propagandists.
See the buried response to question six and tell me I an wrong.

(3,586 posts)This tarring of Sergeant Bergdahl and Republicans in DC and throughout the country can be traced back to the spin mastery of one man: Richard Grenell, Fox News contributor, and principal of Capitol Media. He's been verrrry busy doing the devil's work.
Seriously. Has anyone heard a peep from GOP chair Reince Priebus? No. Which means he's fine with Grenell giving out the marching orders to the politicians and the Fox Fans. Problem for Priebus is that he relinquished control of the party's messaging to a fanatic who is going to overreach by poisoning the well.

(322 posts)no one was claiming to be a republican anymore! They're all independents now, aren't they? Or does it depend on which way the wind is blowing at the time they are called for the poll?

(16 posts)All this uproar over a prisoner swap, makes me wonder what is going on behind the scenes that we are being distracted from, but aside from that, I can't help but wonder what is so bad about bringing Sgt. Bergdahl home? Hasn't that always been America's policy of never leaving a man behind?
Some people are saying we traded five of the 'worst of the worst' terrorists, for a traitor or deserter, whatever.
People like Senator John McCain, saying it was a terrible move on Obama's part because these five men will just turn around and attack us again, and I say really?
After 12 long years in the Gitmo torture camp. these five men are going to pick up where they left off? Instead of going home to their families to try to resume some kind of a life for themselves, after 12 years away they are basically strangers to the people they once knew, and whatever organizations they might have belonged to, they are also strangers.
I doubt if their reception is any better where they are going, than Sgt. Bergdahl's is here.
But then, this is just my opinion, don't ya know
