Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel not President Obama executed the administrations final call to proceed with the prisoner exchange of five ranking Taliban detainees for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, administration officials told Congress today in a classified briefing today.
They indicated [it was] Secretary Hagel [who made the final call], House Armed Services Chairman Buck McKeon, R-California, told reporters following the briefing Monday evening. It was the president of the United States that came out [in the Rose Garden] with the Bergdahls and took all the credit and now that theres been a little pushback hes moving away from it and its Secretary Hagel?

I am so grateful to this administration for following through on what we all believed that we leave no soldier behind, Schakowsky, D-Ill., said. I am completely mystified and quite frankly disgusted that
there has been a demonization of the soldier. Every American deserves to be considered innocent until proven guilty.

Theres a lot of problems with the administrations story, Bachmann said. It keeps changing, and it doesnt add up.

So it wasn't that socialist, muslim, from Kenya but a republican, combat vet, who
is Sec. of Defense who made the call. No doubt Fox News will issue a correction.

(27,461 posts)whether Hagel or Obama made the decision would be irrelevant.
Of course, if by any chance the GOP is playing politics (God forbid!) then it makes all the difference.

(70,635 posts)I guess it really doesn't matter "they" are all bat shit crazy because Obama
is black and still President. No wonder the administration did not clue "them"
in on the final plans for the Bergdahl swap ..... no doubt "they" would have
tried to screw the deal. A long time ago in a very middle class neighborhood
our next door neighbor's brother was Governor of PA, Ray Shafer, and he was
a really good guy and a Republican too but today they all seem to be batshit
crazy to some extent.

Speaking with NewsMaxs Steve Malzberg last week, Rep. Steve Stockman insisted that President Obama has a grudge against the military and the American people and a propensity to fall again and again on the side of terrorists in countries like Egypt, Syria and Libya.
A lot of people say hes not something, we cant say it on the radio, but if it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, I think it might be a duck, he said, suggesting that Obama is a secret Muslim.

(46,416 posts)the mission--the Special Forces deployments and assets moved to the transfer site. So, yeah, it had to be Hagel to give the final go. Panetta backed off in 2012, wouldn't do it. That said, I don't think there was any way Hagel, because of his own background, was going to leave that young man to die in captivity if he could help it.
