Gunmen attack Karachi's Jinnah International Airport

Heavily armed gunmen have attacked Karachi's international airport, killing at least five people and hurling grenades.
Pakistani media reported between four and 10 gunmen had attacked Jinnah International Airport's old terminal.
Security personnel have sealed off the airport and army commandos have been called in, with gunfire continuing.
All operations at the terminal have been suspended and all flights to the airport are being diverted.

KARACHI (Dunya News) Pakistans largest commercial airport Jinnah International Airport has come under siege Sunday night when approximately 5 to 7 attackers breached the security after attacking the Jinnah terminal through firing and hand grenades and infiltrated the terminal, Dunya News reported.
According to reports, the attackers also succeeded in reaching the runway where firing is being exchanged between security personnel and attackers.
No certain loss has been reported as yet but the airport has been closed completely and those inside have been told to stay inside.
Rescue teams are rushing to the airport and reportedly, the airport security has called contingents comprising at least 500 security personnel.

Heavily armed gunmen have attacked Karachi's international airport, killing at least five security guards and hurling grenades, reports say.

Dawn reported that some attackers had managed to get inside one plane and that three planes had been damaged.
Geo News said two attackers were also reported dead and that smoke is billowing from the terminal.
The terminal is not normally used for commercial flights but for cargo and special VIP operations.

Officials are now saying that the death toll from the fighting at the airport is least nine. Dr. Seemi Jamali from Jinnah Hospital in Karachi has told the Associated Press that nine bodies had been brought to the hospital.
She said seven were from the Airport Security Force personnel, one was an employee of the Civil Aviation Authority and another was from the state-run Pakistan International Airlines.

It adds that least seven of the attackers have been killed. That's in addition to the nine people whose bodies were brought to Jinnah Hospital in Karachi following the start of the fighting.

One building was on fire, but it's out now.
No airplanes destroyed.
This was at the general aviation terminal, not the main passenger terminal.

Following reports of fresh violence early on Monday, airport officials said the siege was now over and flights were set to resume in the afternoon.

A spokesman for the group, Shahidullah Shahid, said Monday's assault was "a message to the Pakistan government that we are still alive to react over the killings of innocent people in bomb attacks on their villages".
The dead terminal staff were said to be mostly security guards from the Airport Security Force (ASF) but also airline workers. At least 14 people were wounded.
