David Letterman to retire

Source: CNN Money

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Late night television legend David Letterman will retire in 2015.
Letterman announced his plan during a taping of "The Late Show" on Thursday afternoon. CBS (CBS, Fortune 500) is expected to issue a statement sometime before the program is broadcast Thursday night.

A CBS spokesman declined to comment. Letterman's announcement initially leaked out when a performer, Mike Mills, who was at the taping of "The Late Show" tweeted out the news. "Dave just announced his retirement," Mills wrote.

What exactly Letterman says about his decision on "The Late Show" is not yet known.

Jay 'The Dinosaur' Leno was a travesty after Johnny.

Carson rightly wanted Letterman.

After all, since "Coco" is now the same age as his competitors, he's not going to be pressured to get Leno's old audience(an audience that, basically, doesn't exist anymore) and his sensibility is closer to Dave's in some senses.

They last longer, and are 3 times less expensive. And I doubt if Mittens has ever worn one.

I used to love him and the show. He seems to have been sleepwalking through it the last couple years, which is a shame. I'm glad he is retiring, I hope he can enjoy his family.

Peace

I was a sophomore or junior in high school when I caught my first Letterman show-- he was lampooning Walter Mondale (odd that I remember that) during the presidential run, and threw watermelons off the roof of his building.

Was hooked by his sarcastic, non-sequitur style humor since.

Let's just say his humor did not quite fit the morning show model. They move him to late night pretty quick.

Said that he had hosted the show for 32 years, which was a record.

He was a true fixture in the late night arena.

Hope he considers doing some specials....

He outlasted Leno on late night(I think that became his career goal, once the chance to hose TONIGHT! was gone)and everyone he's competing with is now at least twenty years younger.

Second choice would be John Stewart.

I remember watching the (short-lived) morning show with my dad in a Holiday Inn hotel room in Key West, Florida while on a spring break trip with my family!

Gee, now I am now sad, because my dad died the next year (1981). He was a very conservative (Ayn Rand, Bircher) type of guy, but we both loved Dave. He thought Dave was really funny and cool.

I miss my dad so much.

Thanks for the great link for the article.
