Televangelist Paul Crouch, founder of TBN, dies at 79

Source: LA Times

By Elaine Woo

Paul Crouch, a pioneering televangelist who founded Trinity Broadcasting Network, the world’s largest Christian TV network, died today, according to the network's website. He was 79.

The church reported in October that Crouch had fallen ill and was taken to a Dallas-area hospital while on a visit to a TBN facility in Colleyville, Texas. He had "heart and related health issues," the church said, and he was later returned to California for continued treatment.

The son of a Missouri missionary, Crouch moved to California in the early 1960s to manage the movie and television unit of the Assemblies of God. A decade later, after receiving what he believed was a message from God, he began to buy television stations, cable channels and satellites and developed enough Christian programming to sustain a 24-hour network.

By the mid-1980s, Orange County-based TBN was “the country’s most-watched religious network,” according to J. Gordon Melton and Jon R. Stone in their book “Prime-Time Religion: An Encyclopedia of Religious Broadcasting.”

Frank's Heavenly Bank Account Lyrics!

And if these words you do not heed
Your pocketbook just kinda might recede
When some man comes along and
Claims godly need
He will clean you out right through your
Tweed

That's right, remember there is a big
Difference between kneeling down
And bending over...
He's got twenty million dollars
In his heavenly bank account...
All from those chumps who was
Born again
Oh yeah, oh yeah

He's got seven limousines
And a private plane...
All for the use of his
Special friends
Oh yeah, oh yeah
He's got thousand-dollar suits
And a wembley tie...
Girls love to stroke it
While he's on the phone
Oh yeah, oh yeah

At the house of representatives
He's a groovy guy...
When he gives thanks
He is not alone...

He is dealin'
He is really dealin'
Irs can't determine
Where the hook is

It is easy with the bible
To pretend that
You're in show biz

They won't get him
They will never get him
For the naughty stuff
That he did

It is best in cases like this
To pretend that
You are stupid

He's got presidential help
All along the way

He says the grace
While the lawyers chew
Oh yeah
They sure do

And the govenors agree to say:
"he's a lovely man!"
He makes it easier for
Them to screw
All of you...
Yes, that's true!

'cause he helps put the fear of god
In the common man
Snatchin' up money
Everywhere he can
Oh yeah
Oh yeah

He's got twenty million dollars
In his heavenly bank account
You ain't got nothin', people
You ain't got nothin', people
You ain't got nothin', people
Thank the man...oh yeah

After burying my ancient mother this summer, when we began going thru her papers (she never threw away a thing in that house) we were heartbroken to discover that this 95 yr old woman, who had suffered from dementia for many years, had been taken in by those bastards at TBN.

Ever tried removing an address from their "pledge" drive mailing list? I even wasted a stamp, writing a long diatribe and sending it back inside their SAE, demanding that our old homestead never receive any of their garbage, EVER AGAIN! They never skipped a beat, and months later, that pink-haired freak stills appears in my dead mother's mailbox, regularly.

The Crouch's and TBN have been despicable. They have amassed a huge number of gigantic mansions all from their horrible prosperity gospel message. "Pay us money and Jesus will reward you." Only the worst of the worst do this.

Oh, and one more thing. Their children have reportedly been fighting over their parents' properties for some months because the Crouch's have been going through divorce. I suspect that this is not going to end pretty.

is those who are praising this huckster saying he was a pioneer in Christian broadcasting when in fact it was Jim and Tammy Bakker that were swindling viewers before the Crouch's. Paul was able to build his empire by learning from the mistakes that the Bakker's made.

All of them are pathetic.

Other than the holy land experience, is the deal the city, county and state cut concerning the taxes. The county originally sued Trinity because the holy land experience was an entertainment facility and that Trinity was charging for admission. Trinity claimed it was a church and they were collecting donations not admission.

So a deal was struck, Trinity got their way and all they had to do is have one day a year when admission was free. The best part is that Trinity does not publicize when that day is, and it changes every year.

The kids, Grandkids and (reportedly) ex-wife Janice (see pic below) can fight over the 13 mansions and the private jet and the rest of the spoils of the prosperity gospel.

Here's (ex)wife Janice:

And here's one of the Crouch's 13 mansions:

All from the grift of prosperity gospel. Give all you have and Jesus will reward you -- in heaven no doubt.

How many people could the money it cost to build this monstrosity and furnish it and maintain it have helped? How many families living on the street could have been given a modest, clean, safe house to live in for free?

I believe that is what these people should be doing. Instead of building huge palaces to remind themselves how wonderful they are, that money should go to help those in need.

Building a house like this with donations given to help others is offensive and obscene.

It is likely the largest, but the Crouch's had 12 more properties, all described as mansions. There's also a private jet and a $100,000 air conditioned dog house for Janice's doggies.

So that one mansion is just scratching the surface of their excesses.

It's much worse than that.

Their kids and grand kids have been warring legally with the Crouch's for a couple of years now. Paul and Jan are reportedly (but unconfirmed) divorced, which might explain the reason for this.

With Crouch's death this will likely get very ugly fairly quickly, I predict.

As long as it publicly exposes what they used the money for, that's a good thing.

Richard and Lindsay Roberts (of Oral Roberts/ORU "fame&quot used to live about a mile from me. While Oral and his wife lived in a more modest mid-century modern house built in the early sixties, Richard and his wife built a huge, tacky, red brick mansion that was exceeded only by the tackiness of its interior.

Chandeliers hanging over a garden tub with water jets, a closet bigger than most people's living rooms, a kitchen big enough to serve as a television studio, and a bathroom with Hollywood mirrors and lighting.

I was glad to see the Roberts' shenanigans exposed. I think you're 100% correct that the Crouch family will now expose their dirty laundry for everyone to see. 13 houses--excessive is an understatement!

but I do take great delight in reading the occasional obituary.

The old guard televangelist scammers are dying off and the new ones, mostly their children, lack their drive and charisma and try to compensate for that by being more and more hateful. Or they're using the godly edifices their daddies built like cash cows.

I sincerely hope there isn't another critical mass of charismatic hucksters until at least the next millennium changeover. The human race needs a break.

plus the likes of Pat Robertson have done America a huge disservice over the years. In the long run, I would venture to say they are the largest single cause of the dumbing down of America. Since they started this massive scam, TBN, The Bakers, and The Christian Broadcasting network among others have bought the souls of millions and filled them with RW economic BS even before Reagan was president. They started the media mission of making gullible people stupid, fearful, and ecstatically dependent on their ideology of wealth and the false hope of the second coming of Christ with the fear of Armageddon and the salvation of the rapture and the thousand year reign of Christ on earth.... just to make their lucre.

It takes a lot of delusion to create an empire that could destroy a nation. I have no more honor for the likes of these people than I do the likes of Hitler.
