Marcia Wallace, actress from 'The Simpsons' and 'The Bob Newhart Show', dies at 70

Source: EW

As Edna Krabappel on The Simpsons, Marcia Wallace may be the only 4th-grade teacher to have the same student for 24 years. Before that, she was beloved as Carol Kester, the lovelorn, wisecracking secretary on The Bob Newhart Show.

Wallace, who was a breast cancer survivor for 28 years, has died at age 70, according to the showrunner of The Simpsons. “I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace,” producer Al Jean said in a statement to EW. “She was beloved by all at The Simpsons and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character.”

It has become a sad tradition of the extremely long-running show to simply cease using characters whose voice actors pass away. The first instance was when Phil Hartman died in 1998, and the show retired his sleazy attorney Lionel Hutz and desperate pretty-boy actor Troy McClure.

Cross gently Marcia.

An aside, Ms Krabappel was an homage to Miss Crabtree of Our Gang fame, played by June Marlowe.

I love The Simpson's and the interactions between Bart and Mrs K are hilarious. My favorite:

Edna: Bart!!! Are those liquor bottles???

Bart: What? I brought enough for everybody!

Edna: Take those to the teacher's lounge! You can have what's left at the end of the day!

she was already in her 40's (kind of groundbreaking at the time) and the look on her face, in her eyes
was pure love and adoration for her son.
Sadly, she lost her husband shortly after and then faced her own medical crisis within a decade.

She was funny, funny and I enjoyed her acting.

My thoughts are with her son, family and friends.

You were dearly loved and will be greatly missed! I still remember watching the Bob Newhart Show as a kid in the 1970's (on Saturday nights after the Carol Burnett Show, I believe) and as a HUGE Simpson's fan, you were one of my favorites! It sucks getting older and watching familiar faces and voices slip away into time.

I last read about her when she left The Simpsons. I never liked the new voice, perhaps they should have deleted the character because the new actor just tries unsucessfully to emulate Wallace's unique voice. I'm not sure, but I think she left the show over demands for more money.

RIP forever, Carol/Mrs Krabappel and Marcia Wallace.

I love the Simpsons and Edna was one of my favorite characters. I attribute that in no small part to Ms. Wallace's ability to give the voice of her character such depth and dimension that she was able to make a cartoon character come to life for me

I will miss her. Rest in peace, Marcia Wallace. Thanks for the hours of entertainment and enjoyment you provided me with throughout the years. You did well and the world is a better place for having had you and a sadder place for having lost you

She always had something witty to say, and she reminded me of a lady named Bernice, who was my Dad's secretary at the time. Bernice also had red hair and had a great sense of humor, and was extremely well organized and I don't think ever made a mistake or forgot to do something during the many years she and my Dad worked together.

I always thought the scenes with Carol on Bob Newhart were the best ones.

RIP, and thanks for all the laughs over the years.

And "Newhart" was one of my favorite shows, back in the day, don't think his subsequent two shows were nearly as good. The cast of that show was spectacular...

I believe she played the housekeeper on the sitcom spoofing the Bush White House family, created by the South Park guys. It was a trip seeing her on TV again. Unfortunately, got a quick hook in response to 9/11.
