Rocket alert sirens sound in Israel near Lebanese border

JERUSALEM, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Rocket alert sirens sounded in Israeli towns near the border with Lebanon on Thursday after several explosions were heard, witnesses said.

Israeli security authorities said the source of the explosions was still unclear.

"I heard a weak explosion, and then in parallel to the siren, I heard a stronger boom," Keinan Engel, a resident of the northern town of Nahariya, told Army Radio.

2. Rockets from south Lebanon hit Israel

Four rockets have been fired at Israel from the southern Lebanese port of Tyre, the Israeli army said, as witnesses reported explosions near Israel's northern border.

An Israeli army source told Al Jazeera that one Katyousha rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome System on Thursday.

No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

Witnesses reported hearing blasts near the northern coastal town of Nahariya.

6. IDF bombs Lebanon target in retaliation for rocket attack

Israel's Air Force bombed a terror target in Lebanon early on Friday in retaliation for a cross-border rocket salvo on Thursday, the IDF spokesman said. The aircraft carried out a direct hit.

Military sources said that the target was a group of tunnels that may have served as rocket launching pads but that do not belong to Hezbollah.

On Thursday, IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz held a situation assessment meeting with top military officers following the rocket fire from Lebanon. It is estimated that global jihad terrorists fired the rockets, but the army is pointing a finger at Lebanon.

On Thursday afternoon, two air raid sirens sounded in the western Galilee after four katyusha rockets were fired at Israel from Lebanon. Sirens sounded, among other places, in Nahariya and Akko where alarms were not heard since the Second Lebanon War.
