Health Mandate For Employers Delayed to 2015

WASHINGTON In a significant setback for President Obamas signature domestic initiative, the administration on Tuesday abruptly announced a one-year delay, until 2015, in his health care laws mandate that larger employers provide coverage for their workers or pay penalties. The decision postpones the effective date beyond next years midterm elections.
Employer groups welcomed the news of the concession, which followed complaints from businesses and was posted late in the day on the White House and Treasury Web sites while the president was flying home from Africa. Republicans gleeful reactions made clear that they would not cease to make repeal of Obamacare a campaign issue for the third straight election cycle.
While the postponement technically does not affect other central provisions of the law in particular those establishing health-insurance marketplaces in the states, known as exchanges, where uninsured Americans can shop for policies it throws into disarray the administrations effort to put those provisions into effect by Jan. 1.
I am utterly astounded, said Sara Rosenbaum, a professor of health law and policy at George Washington University and an advocate of the law. It boggles the mind. This step could significantly reduce the number of uninsured people who will gain coverage in 2014.

(22,143 posts)Three words, Medicare For All, would have changed this game from a farce to an epic win. But no one wanted an epic win, except the insurance companies and big pharma. And they got it.
Egg on face, again.

(34,582 posts)with public option, instead of single payer, it was doomed. You don't start haggling at the point you want to end up at. I wonder how many politicians had their coffers filled by passing this turd in the punch bowl.

(449 posts)I wish I could say this is simply President Obama and Secretary Sebelius trying to implement the ACA the right way, the first time. But this appears to be the Treasury Department holding the law hostage because they can't (don't want to?) deal with the new business taxation and reporting issues. The rest of the law (and the people it aims to help) will suffer because of this delay. Sadly this isn't the first time that the Administration has put business/revenue interests in front of the interests of ordinary Americans.

(25,111 posts)Medicare, Medicaid aka Medi-Cal did, where GOPers like Pres Reagan said it would destroy America. Guess what, it didn't. And Obamacare is working just fine here in California.

(4,440 posts)I thought the time of certain actions like this- the employer mandate, for example, were in law.
Not even the President can change the law.
Can they even do this?
