(11,464 posts)It is a big obstacle, but it is one that shall be overcome.
There will be a year to make sure every single person has the info (and funds if necessary) to obtain whatever is needed
for 2013, 2014 and beyond.
By these draconian states changing immediately, they are leaving a lot of time til the 2013 and 2014 for everyone to get what is needed
and more important, to get everyone TO KNOW what will be needed
These laws must not be allowed to go unanswered, and they will be answered in the voting booth.
No obstacle is too big that it cannot be overcome.

(58 posts)so people have access to the many other benefits requiring an ID. Does anyone know what percent of the population could not provide a qualifying ID?

we trust each other so much we want to make sure they are really Murkin's
however isn't making a legal ID a requirement to vote a poll tax, unless of course states that vote for this will start issueing them for free?

(633 posts)I live in this god-forsaken state, and I can testify that I have NEVER seen racism as it exists in
the state of Mississippi. It's blatant and sickening. I honestly didn't think racism like this still even
EXISTED in this country anymore.... until I moved here.
I'm not african-american, so I don't have much experience with that. But I did not grow up anywhere
near the so-called "bible belt". THESE PEOPLE ARE NUTS!!!
I was stationed in Mississippi for a very short time and could not believe the blatant racism - that was in the 70's

(8,821 posts)They just couldn't wait to start with the disenfranchisement. I'll bet both Texas and Mississippi have ten more bills in the wings which will yet further suppress the vote.
Justice Roberts now has his legacy and he will never shake it. This decision will be the one they always remember.

(5,342 posts)RALEIGH, N.C. Voter identification legislation in North Carolina will pick up steam again now that the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down part of the Voting Rights Act, a key General Assembly leader said Tuesday.
A bill requiring voters to present one of several forms of state-issued photo ID starting in 2016 cleared the House two months ago, but it's been sitting since in the Senate Rules Committee to wait for a ruling by the justices in an Alabama case, according to Sen. Tom Apodaca, R-Henderson, the committee chairman. He said a bill will now be rolled out in the Senate next week.

(24,354 posts)and be a huge boost to the Democratic GOTV movement, just like all their voter suppression efforts in 2012. What do they think made people determined enough to vote to stand in line for 12 hours?
