JENNINGS COUNTY - Authorities say a 12-year-old southern Indiana boy has died after being shot in the head when his older brother mishandled a rifle.
Jennings County Sheriff's Sgt. James Blevins said Thursday that Seth Box died at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Emergency workers found Seth unresponsive after he was shot by his 16-year-old brother late Monday at the family's rural home several miles north of North Vernon.

(12,296 posts)... this happened after the fact, at home.
Which makes it even sadder - for the whole family, and especially the kid who now has to live knowing he killed his brother.

(7,672 posts)We were raised around guns.
1. All long guns are broken open or chamber emptied - positive check.
2. Handguns are always cleared and all bullets removed or clip taken out.
3. Stored in a gun safe in the garage - you came in through the garage door AFTER making sure the weapon was unloaded and locked it up. Under no circumstances would you take a weapon into the house nor hand it off to anyone else. YOUR responsibility start to finish, beginning at about age 16 if dad thought you were ready.
We did not hunt. We shot at targets for competition and bragging rights.
Start with a business card on a clothes pin at 300 yards with an open sight .22 rifle.
We were lucky to have access to an abandoned caliche pit a mile from the house as well.
Guns are not toys, and knowing how to pull the trigger is not trained.

(1,016 posts)The odds are great that many more accidental shooting happen but are not reported because only a hole in the wall is the result. And yet gun owners claim that the guns are there for self-defense. But you are morel likely to have an accidental shooting than to stop a home invasion.

(12,515 posts)knowing he killed his little bother. I can't hazard a guess of how bad that has got to feel having that guilt hang over your head for the rest of your life every f'in day.

I really hope that people understand the need to treat the surviving brother in this case with compassion, and that he gets good therapy to help him cope with what is coming.

An "accidental gun shooting" story needs a HOOK to get noticed in the flood of stories about someone accidentally blowing away someone else with a gun, especially if you're not a little kid who didn't just get a Crickett "My First Rifle" for their fifth birthday :
Green Beret, Iraq Vet Father Accidentally Shot And Killed By Four Year Old Son
There ya go - a U.S. Army Special Forces vet shot and killed by a four year old.
Still relatively unusual even in the gun-saturated Bible Belt.
